Hey Guys...

Well my first HT went well..

Wally Hayes HT'd a total of 19 of my first knives for me this morning and I learned quite a bit..

We loaded about 6 knives into the forge and fired it up..
Wally even let me do several of them which was pretty cool...

First lesson learned!!

Don't bend over too close to the forge!!! I burned a Huge patch of hair in the front..Bad enough that I have to get a haircut tomorrow!! LOL

First knife I finished tonight turned out really good..

I rounded the entire knife profile on the slack belt, flat sanded both sides.. The problem started when I went to clean up the hollow..

I couldn't catch the groove,, and buggered it up..Each time I touched the belt it started to get worse..

Panic set in, so I jumped in the truck and headed back to Wally's for some help. He cleaned it up with Ease and Expertise, and only took him a few minutes to clean it up...

I just didn't want to take the chance of wrecking the blade as I was starting to get nervouse and lost ALL confidence in myself...Probably my first mistake...

Anyway,, after sharpening it I'm happy to say it turned out really nice,,and quite proud of the outcome....

Going to start a new batch over the weekend..

Will post a picture tomorrow in daylight...

Thanks

ya feed us some pictures. i now have a belt grinder but befor i had a disk grinder i made. it had a slite woble so that when running at low speeds it was very bumpy but i learned how to work with it and made some great knives. i still use it. just keep practising and you will become one with the grinder.

EXCELLENT ERIC! Congratulations. Confidence is the key! keep at it you'll get it no problem. When i first learned with a gasser, i didn;t know not to get to close to the opening and lost most of the hair from my hands and lower arms:D. I cannot wait to see them.

Hey Guys..

Thanks....

JT..

There is a Japanese maker who uses nothing but a disk to grind,, including hollowgrind..Pretty interesting...
Alot can be done with them if you know how to use them...

I'm getting use to the 2X72 though,, it'll take some time...
Thank God for the Vari Pentra Drive.. I couldn't see doing anything with one wide open...

Sam..

Yaa..

Wally was laughing at me afterwards.. He said I was lucky my head didn't catch fire or he'd have to quench me with oil..LOL

He took over as I was working a litte to long in front of it and my hands were burning pretty good...

That forge is a Ton of fun...

I got a 4 foot section of heavy wall steel pipe from a friend who works at the company who is supplying the steel for the new World Trade center buildings in NY..I think it's about an 18" diameter pipe..Wally and I are going to make 2 new forges from it, one for him and the other I'll set up in my garage, so I can play as well...

Once he teaches me to HT I'll be able to do it here myself..

I'm still not too sure about working with carbon steel, because you have to always keep things oiled,, but I sure do like the ability to do it myself...
I guess Stainless is only a matter of getting an oven though Eh...

Thanks guys,, I'll get some pictures up later today..

Great news to hear that there'll be another smith in the knife community.
Congratulations, Eric!

Hey Guys...

Troop...

Just so theres no misunderstanding these were made via Stock Removal, not "smithed". However if I hang around Wally enough,, I'll be swinging a hammer :)

I watched him beat out a big Bowie yesterday.. Amazing to watch..

Ok,, anywhere here they are...

Hi Eric,

Very nice knives!!! Please, keep on the good work...!

I got the same kind of "uneven" finish in my holes of my first knives; I think a HSS counter sink would help us...I tried with a bigger drill bit; it resulted in the same kind of finish...:o
BTW, my first knife is heading to Rob Ridley for Heat treating; would it be possible for Rob to send it to you afterward for sheating? I'll shoot you an email when Rob has heat treated the blade.

Hey Guys..

Thanks much..

I'm Pumped about it...

Gonna start dropping some Serious cash into it..
There are Macines I Want !! LOL

Jim..
I need some help clearing out that right hand garage bay !! LOL

BTW..
I have your Emerson here..
How it got into MY pocket I don't know.. LOL :)

Should have kept my mouth shut for a few months..You probably tore the house apart already didn't you !! LOL

I guess I'll just have to carry it til next sunday when I see you..
I wouldn't want to forget it at home :)

Sorry Bro...

Defaultuser...

You want to send it to me directly from HT ??
Is it a Skeleton handle ??

Make sure if you do that ALL of the edges are softened and rounded..If there are sharp shoulders on the plunge lines,, it'll be a nightamre..

No sharp edges..

Email me and we can discuss it, before you send...

Thanks again..
