I have not done any heat treating for a number of years, since I got out of knife making for a while. The last time we did any HT it was using 1095 and it turned out pretty good. This time I am using 1084 which I am not overly familiar with. After the initial shaping I did a flat grind and finished the knife down to 220 grit, ending with some worn out 220 so closer to 300 likely. Started the oven pre-heating at 400 as per what I read on several sites. I used two hand held propane torches to bring the blade up to non magnetic. I didn't heat the tang very much as I didn't think it was needed. I then held the blade at a constant color just above non magnetic for a little while and quenched in heated canola oil. I let the blade air cool to below room temperature after quench because i was outside. Once it had cooled it went into the oven at 400 for one hour. It is now on its second run at 400. Does this seem like it will work out or did i likely ruin a good piece of steel and about 8-10 hours of work lol?
