After having kids 5 years ago (I have a five years old and a three year old) I finally have purchased new hiking and backpacking gear and we went on a 48 hour shake out trip to get used to my new gear and have some fun.
We went to Pedernalas State Park in Texas and stayed in the primitive camp grounds. We hiked about 4 miles on the first day and about 6 the second.
Here was our camp site:
Although camp fires are forbidden in the camp ground - I did start a small tinder bundle on fire with my Magnesium and Ferro stick combo (from my PSK in my Backpack). It was very small and we put it out directly after getting it to start.
It was difficult at first but I rebuffed the cedar bark (from a dead tree - but a little damp because of a recent rain) and collected the magnesium shavings in a small leaf.
After dinner (I used a Jetboil stove and some dehydrated food) we went down to get water and filter some for cooking and drinking. We found a VERY cool crevasse to get down to the river. We used a Pur filter and it worked VERY well.
This is our view of the Pedernalas river valley from our camp site:
There was quite a bit of animal scat around our camp site, cat, bear, armadillo - and others - here is my best friend Jason trying to identify some local scat - you tell me what you think it is:
Kidding - it is some bark - but I fooled you!
Here I am on a bluff taking a look at the river.
Here I am on the trail:
Here is my buddy Jason again at a local cold spring:
There are plenty more - but you get the point.
We had a blast and all my gear worked GREAT.
