I'm in the same boat as you. I have a 555HG, and have been saving for a Rift, but now I'm wavering between it and the large BC. I really like the blade shape of my mini-Grip, and having a blade of similar shape with G10 handles is very tempting. However, the D2 gives me pause, as all I have is a Sharpmaker with some well-used diamond rods, and my attempts at convex sharpening are going nowhere fast. The Rift looks just about perfect in terms of usefulness. If only it was a flat grind like the 610...
 
The Rift is flat ground. Also, you should have no problem maintaining the edge on the BC with those sharpmaker diamond rods. D2 is tough stuff but I think people blow it a bit out of proportion as far as it being too hard to sharpen.

yeah, but they are well-used diamond rods, about 7 years old. If they'll still work, then I may have to lean toward the BC.
