First Impression: Busse Basic Model 7 in Black

Hi Cliff,
I think you're right the knife does have some character now. The deformation on the forward portion of the belly is almost like what you described. Dings that have to be looked at an angle to really appreciate.

I touched up the flat grind with the Sharpmaker and that helped somewhat.

The coating, though showing some wear is still black and holding up fine.

I don't want anyone to get too concerned about this, afterall, I used this knife very, very hard...much harder than any other and now I got a knife with a little character.

How is everyone eles's work out on their Busse going?

My Battle Mistress continues to please me. I've done some more branch wacking and the black coating has kind of gotten shiny around the area where I do most of my chopping, almost as if the friction with the wood has burnished the finish. No scratches, just shiny areas in the coating. I use a steel or a fine ceramic rod to strop the blade and it pops back to like new shaving sharp with just a few swipes.

I hope that I am able to use mine often enough to give it a well worn look. I like a knife that shows use, it's like an old handgun where the bluing has been worn and the grips are worn smooth by use, it adds to the history and character of the tool!

Initially, I had worn a small callous on my pinky where the parrot's beak at the end of the grip was rubbing my hand. Now, it fits my hand like a glove with no discomfort despite, full strength chops into hard wood!

I hope I have a son someday so I can hand this knife down to him for another lifetime fo service. I 'm sure it will outlast me!

I have knocked off the coating on the #7 Basic in two places, one near the handle where I do heavy chopping and one out on the tip where I do most brush clearing. The coating didn't flake or fracture off, it just wore off evenly. It is decent, but not as durable as say the one Mission uses. It does not appear to be a ceramic coat like Busse has stated that goes on the full INFI line but a regular powder coat of some kind. Maybe Mike could clarify this.

Yeah, I had some discomfort at first due to impacts from the butt-hook. They are however not near as damaging as an abrasive handle like Ontario's Spec Plus line and you get used to it after awhile. As well, even if a blister forms it will be on the outside of your pinky finger and does not interfere with normal work.

Someone doesn't want me to finish it I know that for sure. For example I went out last weekend and wanted to see how long it would take me to really dull my BM, how much damage if any the edge would see, and how long it would take to restore. I estimated about 500 chops on some hard wood would produce a noticable dulling and that I would work from there stopping when the edge became too dull for slicing work.

I got to about 400 chops and ran out of wood to chop so I went and found another patch of dead wood. I got to about 50 chops when I felt a burning pain in my right heel. I figured I had stepped on some glass or barbed wire and turned around to see what was up. I saw nothing so just went back to work. Before I could complete a dozen chops I felt another similar pain in my left ankle. Before I got all the way around to check it out I was getting more and more hits. I look down to see a bunch of wasps none to pleased to see me standing on their home and they are letting me know in no uncertain terms.

My dog of course thought the situation was quite amusing and left his squirrel hunt to chase me as I quite rapidly left the area.
