:
I went over to Lynn Griffith's today along with Richard and Chief from the forums to participate in a test to destruction of some knives. Some were plain POS's and some were made by some well known manufacturers. The test included on of Lynn's larer knifes and it wound up being totally destroyed by bending it sidways in a vise.
It was also one of the few that cut through a 3/8" carriage bolt.I am very impressed with the ATS-34 that Lynn uses as his steel of choice for his knives.Great Stuff!!
What does this have to o wit our very own Cobalt Special AK Bowie?
Easy!! When it came to the flex test and bolt cutting I threw it into the mix!!
Of course i doesn't flex much and I should have let one of the stout young guys there do that part of it,but I flexed it a bit with the tip just the depth of the vise jaws, about 3/4".Needless to say it didn't flex much and it returned to true.
I put the bolt just above the recurve of the blade and tightene the vise confident tht no major damage would occur.
It cut the boly in half with jut a bit of rolling on the edge.A couple of minutes with my old Cattaragus 225Q and a chakma I forgot I had in my pocket and then a bit of finish work with a small hard blade I also had in my pocket and the edge was shaving sharp again with no sign of where the bolt was cut in two.
The other guys were also impressed. The AK Bowe performe just as I figured it would.
Lynn's ATS-34 blade which was 0.050" at the top of the sharpening bevel fared the best in the test with very little evidence as to where the bolt was cut in two,but we're talking about a full hardened blade here.
Richard is gonna post some pix and write up the review on all the knives.
I will send the cut off bolt end to Uncle Bill probably when he gets back from Nepal.
Maybe this will be the week I can do some serious testing with the AK Bowie. At least now we know it will cut bolts in two with minimal damage.
