First Impressions of Swiss Army 1 / Alox Solo

I have a SAK Huntsman… nice knife but man, you feel it in the pocket. And the plastic covers feel cheap. I need to try one of their thinner, Alox models.

A stag SAK would be sweet! I know some modders will do it, but I wonder why there aren’t more factory varieties in terms of materials.

I must be lucky I have never had a bad alox.

My preferance is for old issued knifes the quality is so good they stopped inspecying theme.

Model 1961 Variant 4 (1987 – 1993)

In 1987 Swiss Army decided that it was no longer required to put a W-K stamp on each knife. After Victorinox and Wenger delivered so many years high quality knives, Swiss Army stopped quality inspections. Victorinox and Wenger than produced new scales without the spot for the W-K stamp.

Victorinox and Wenger have produced the Soldier model 1961 from 1962 untill 2008. This model is 93mm long and has Alox scales. It was officially issued to the Swiss Army during these years. Victorinox knife is also called “Soldier’s knife”. Wenger’s knife is called “Standard Issue” (SI). Each knife has the year of production stamped on the tang of the backside of the main blade. Untill 1987 each knife carries a WK-stamp on the frontside scale. WK stands for Waffenkontrolle. This is the quality inspection stamp of Swiss Army.
During this long period of time, the knife was changed a few times. Most of the changes concerned the scales.

I wish Victorinox would expand the number of ALOX offerings, devoting energy to bringing back some of the discontinued models rather than emphasizing special colors for the relatively few current models.
Its baffling why they dont,a cadet in the old style with 2 blades would be a big seller for example.

I had a pioneer solo for several years before I ever tried a pioneer, soldier and then a pioneer x. I came to love every single one. The robust construction of these models combined with the quality and price is so hard to beat. At some point I also plan to get a farmer. The pioneer x is my favorite and what I carry most of the time.

YES! (Literally) decades ago, I had one of the two-blade, no-nail file models but one of our daughters lost it somewhere in France! I do not like knives with nail files.
I had one a real beauty I sold it,I could kick myself.
The only good thing is it went to someone good who cherishes it.
