First Karambit: 5.11 CUB Master 2.0 vs FOX/Derespina FX-590 Chiroptera?

Here's mine from Derespina. :)

The only issue is the questions the officers might raise for a blade like this.

California has pretty decent knife laws, surprisingly. No blade length limits on folders or fixed blades. So technically you could legally carry a sword if you wanted to.

This is everything LA & LA county has on knives, it isn't much, and it's intentionally kept vague:

13.62.010 Knives and daggers defined.

As used in this chapter, the terms "knives and daggers" shall include any knife having a blade of three inches or more in length; any spring-blade, switch-blade or snap-blade knife; any knife any blade of which is automatically released by a spring mechanism or other mechanical device; any ice pick or similar sharp stabbing tool; any straight-edge razor or any razor blade fitted to a handle.

(Ord. 11915 § 1, 1979.)

13.62.020 Carrying knives and daggers in plain view prohibited.

It is unlawful for any person to carry on his person, in plain view, any knife or dagger.

(Ord. 11915 § 2, 1979.)

13.62.030 Exemptions to chapter applicability.

The foregoing restrictions shall not be deemed to prohibit the carrying of ordinary tools or equipment for use in a lawful occupation or for the purpose of lawful recreation, or where the carrying of a knife or dagger is a recognized religious practice.

(Ord. 11915 § 3, 1979.)

13.62.040 Violation—Penalty.

Any person violating this chapter is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not exceeding $500.00 or by imprisonment in the County Jail for a period not exceeding six months, or by both such fine and imprisonment.

(Ord. 11915 § 4, 1979.)

Carrying a concealed knife of over 3in in LA is perfectly legal. But as soon as the knife comes out of the pocket in "plain view" then it immediately becomes illegal. Be careful with pocket clips too, having a displayed pocket clip could be defined as in "plain view". So basically, as long as you have your knife completely concealed, in pocket, you are completely okay. As for Wave Karambits and wave knives in general, they are also completely legal in Los Angeles and CA,

I have no experience with the CUB Master, but I have an older Journeyman that CM waved some years back. I also have a live DART. As a defensive tool the DART is better because of the inline blade, but I hate the pocket-eating G10 scales and the fact it's a liner lock, although a well-made one. The Journeyman just draws and opens more easily. The lock tension was light, though, and I had a Boye dent put in the lock release.

Depending on how they come out, I may end up with the Browning Vanquish (seen below at the 3:00 mark), despite the fact it's a liner lock. There's something about me that can't abide carrying an expensive knife, which is why I won't keep the DART.

I have owned both karambits and though my hands are slightly bigger than yours [4" at the knuckles], I think that you will appreciate the overall more compact size of the Chiroptera over the Tarani Cub. The Cub seems a little more substantial in hand with the thick zytel scales, but I assure you, the G10 coated steel liners in the Chiroptera will feel much more at home in your hand than the 5.11 will. It was much easier for me to change grips during use with the Chiroptera than with the 5.11... despite the load of orienting divots it has as opposed to the 590's single pair, I found the more hand-filling bulk of the Chiroptera to be more ergonomic.

In short, my vote goes to the FX-590.
