First Khukri Recommendation

Plus, I live in Australia and I think the international shipping is going to take a while.
I've got a question for those who don't live in the USA. When getting a special order do they ship from Nepal direct or first ship to Reno?

When placing a special order do you get to pick which kami will make your knife?

We have a few members from down under here, maybe they will chime in with better figures, but, IIRC, it only takes a couple weeks and a good part of that time is spent clearing customs.

All orders, special or no are first shipped to Reno for final inspection and shipped to the customer from there.

This question would be one you'd have to ask auntie. I suppose it would depend on his availability and workload.

I just placed an order for a 15" CAK. With its unbreakable guarantee and so many people praising it, I thought I should give it a try. Now, I'll have to wait a month or two since Auntie said she has no stock, but has asked the Kamis to make one. Plus, I live in Australia and I think the international shipping is going to take a while. Can't wait to have a go at some of that dead trees in my garden. As wildmanh suggested, I will post photos once I get my hands on this. Many thanks to you all.

Hi Mate.

I live in Sydney, made my order for a CAK 16.5" on a monday and received it right on Friday :D:thumbup:

I Think it only works out like that if you're lucky enough that she has what you want in stock in Reno.

Exactly. IIRC the kuks are shipped in batches once a month or so (keeps the individual trans-Pacific freight down). If she has it in stock, they get to their destination in record time.

[QUOTE: khukri recommendations. A bit about me: I am about 5' 5" and weigh about 125 lbs. I am looking for a khukri for camping and bushcraft. I looked at the field khukris and was initially considering the CAK, but reading wildmike's many posts has now convinced me to go for the M43 instead.

Which khukri would you all recommend for me based on my build? I would like to know widely which is recommended, not just between the M43 and the CAK. Also, which size should I go for? The camping tasks I am looking to do mainly involve batoning wood, chopping etc. I won't be working much with meat or skinning.

Thanks in advance.[/QUOTE]

Your weight/size is pretty close to that of a Nepali  , but you haven't grown-up with one in your hand since 5 or 6 years of age.;)

I would suggest a bit smaller/lighter knife unless you are extremely "wirey". (If you swing a carpenter's 22 to 24 oz. framing hammer, or stone mason's/blacksmith/farrier's hammer all day, or are a sheep-shearer, ignore what I have to say....)
You could not beat a CAK if you could get one of as "small" as 14 to no more than 15 or 16 inches OAL.

Since I am old, a bit damaged and arthritic, tho still fairly strong, would-be 180 lbs. if I weren't 25 lbs over-weight:rolleyes:, I am very pleased with my village-finish 17.5" GS that is "light for it's length".
It is 1lb. 6 oz. in weight and is "fast" but will still chop incredibly well, tho I'de bet a CAK two or even three inches shorter would be even better.

I have a spl. order for a Dui Chirra with CAK -style handle w/riveted-on grip panels. (The full-width tang of the CAK is extremely strong.)
I asked for a 17 to 18" blade, but the Dui Chirra has TWO fullers(wide grooves) that will make the blade appreciably lighter, possibly just a few ounces heavier than my super-fine GS of aprox. the same length.

^^he uses a 15" AK and doesnt appear to be a super strong or big guy.^^

hey im 6'3" and run every day thank you very much :D

but yea not the biggest built, the 15" ak is going to work fine with just about any frame, so long as you work out your wrists some, ~25 oz of knife can be bad for the wrists if you hit a knot unexpectedly, be sure youre comfortable with the weight in hand before chopping

Im from Nashville, but the video was taken up on the Cumberland Plateau (sorry to be vague) so it makes sense that the upperland vegitation would be similar to Sevier
it would probably be better to continue this in the cantina thread I made for the video... dont want to hijack this one :foot:

so ahh yes... first khuk.. someone mentioned the sirupati, my first Khukuri was a sirupati, and its awesome! it is definently a light fast knife for a khukuri, but it still has more capablity than any of my "sharpened lawnmower blade" knives. For delimbing and clearing thick brush it has no equal. Its relatively easy on the arms as well as being a TON of fun to swing

Hi All,

I'm a smaller dude too (5'-6" & 150) and bought a 15" GRS at about 24 oz. Is there a significant (or slight) difference between say an 18 oz compared to a 24 oz?

Thank You

There are a lot of variables. If you are asking if that weight difference in similar length khuks would be significant, I would say yes. I prefer a 15-18" khuk with the shorter for general purpose and the longer for dedicated chopping, but a 15" 24 oz. traditional tang khuk would be a good chopper.
