Finally got an HI khukuri, got it in trade and already it has received more baby treatment than any of my other blades. Started by waxing the blade with trappers wax, and polishing the sheath with Danner black boot polish. These knives do have an appeal.:) Next will be to apply so treatment to the handle to bring out some shine and colour to the wood.
Unfortunatly the chap I got it from knew nothing about it. I believe it to be a BAS, just a tad over 15" blade marked with an 8 pointed sun (Sher?). wood handled without the habaki style bolster. It has a BAS scabbard with a military frog. The chakma and karda are horn handled and about 4" o/a. There are cracks in the handle of them but super glue should fix that.
My questions are khukuris designed to be worn for a cross draw?
And does anyone have much experience with the scabbards holding up in wet conditions. Just wondering if I bring it and wear it when doing some backcountry canoeing if the wood will swell up.
Thanks

:)

hstdist-- I've tried both cross draw and strong side carry. I find that strong side (right for me) works best, but you should certainly try both and use whatever is most comfortable for you. I think it depends in part on the size of the khukuri as well. The big thing to be aware of is that you should draw the khukuri so that the spine instead of the edge is in contact with the sheath as you pull it out. Otherwise, the khukuri can cut itself out of the sheath as you draw it. Hope this makes sense. Check the safety FAQ for correct drawing method.

As for wet conditions with the sheath, it shouldn't be a problem. I posted a similar question a while back. The sheath is made of wood and leather though, so it will probably expand and contract a bit as it gets wet and dries back out. If you have protected the leather with polish, it should be ok.

The cross draw question is a definite "yes". At least that is what I do.

As far as wet conditions, the scabbard doesn't do well in that environment. Leather, etc. will swell and rot. Others here may have a different view however. ;)

In the front works for me, old Filipino Farmer style draw, though most of the time I just carry it in my left hand, and draw two handed when the time comes.

Sounds like thats what you have. the Mil frog is a dead giveaway. If you post a pic, or just hop over to the shop on Andale, you can compare yours to the ones for sale.

Most of my khuks are around 15" and i find that the cross draw is really the most effective way to carry the knife. This is especially true if the sheath is a tad on the tight side to begin with. I also think that you'll run into less problems accidentally cutting the leather if you have to cross draw it. Josh is dead on when he says to keep the spine along the back of the sheath as you draw it. Make sure to keep your hand on the backside as you pull it out, too. An accidental deep slice to the hand out in the middle of the wilderness is not a good thing:(!

Bruise there is one other way Ill transport khuks around, but it involves someone walking kinda like a peguin in front:eek:   :barf:

Ken......Check out "The Sarki Shop"....I bought a leather sheath from them for my kukuri to carry in the woods....very nice work. Great variety. Terry Sisko is great to work with and will build what you want..........F.S.
