First Khukuri - What should I get?

"...But I must warn you that they are addictive ...I think it is something with the red rouge that tinge the handles..."

You may be on to something there! Perhaps a sub-cutaneous implant of that same rouge could help to control the impulse. The area of administration could be made khukurie-shaped as well...

Glad to see you stopped by! I don't think I can add anything! Looks like the experts have you covered!;) Enjoy!

:)

Things are starting to look like an 18" Ang Khola. I think I may find that the extra 2.5 lbs on the pack are worth it due to the extra usefulness over an axe, which would probably take up similar space and weight. Also the 18" AK seems like the biggest bang for the buck.

On the other hand the BAS looks very nice as well. The way everyone here is talking, I will likely wind up with a few different ones anyway.;)

I will probably hold off for a day or so yet, to see what other comments pop up and allow my decision to solidify. Also to get in just under the wire on the August sale.:D

Best regards to all!

philth...

I have a 28 ounce 18" Ang Khola and it is the last of the six I own that I would part with.

Hmmm... Just down the road from Red Deer, the center of the Universe!;) :D

The important thing is get one and try it out thoroughly, that is the important thing...for it is from your experiences using it that you'll determine what you want in your next khukuri. Don't be afraid to really beat on your first khukuri, they're made pretty solidly and are backed up by the best warranty in the world.

Just because everyone drives around it doesn't mean it's the center of the universe.

:D :D :D

Besides, everyone in Toronto knows where the REAL center is...

Try a WWII - the first size that comes up available as a blem. Either 16.5 or 18 inch.

What you can't do with a 16.5 WWII doesn't need to be done by a khuk. It's the perfect balance for all around anything and everything.

The 18 WWII is better in every way, shape, and especially in feel. Unless it's an inch and a half too big on your belt.

Just my opinion. Worth what you paid for it.

 Got me a new toy...

:D :D :D :D :D

I can't wait to see my new baby once it has been delivered. From the ultrasound, it looks beautiful...

Thanks to everyone for your kindness and advice. This one will be nice and portable for backpacking, and won't lose any utility if I feel the need for something bigger for other occasions. (Or if I simply want another one;) ). By the sound of it; I'll be consuming these things like carbon steel Doritos in the near future.

Best regards to all,
Phil

Congratulations Geezer, you'll get good service out of your 15"AK. It's a handy size and shouldn't take up too much room lashed to your pack. Personally, I like to keep a good belt knife on me in case I ever have to ditch my pack. I've thoroughly tested the JKM-1 and, thanks to Bobwhite, the Kumar Karda, and found them both to be very capable field knives. Get either one, and I guarantee you'll wind up using it often.

Get the 18" WWII. It is the perfect compromise between weapon and tool. The balance is awesome. If you have to go anywhere, it can handle the task. I have handled the AKs, and even though they make great choppers, in my hands I feel they are a little too heavy. I have an 18" Gelbu Special, and it's nice, but a little light. I still like a little heft. I just got the 18" WWII and it is by far my favorite. The handle is the right length and the weight is perfect. I plan to get more down the road.

one is never enough
How true, How true! Welcome Geez and you did right by getting the AK. Great khuk. But now you need a GS and a UBE and a Kobra and a WWII and a Garud, etc. Enjoy the AK!:D
