First knife attempt in progress.

I hate you. I hate you because you have a mill and the skills to use it. I am in the process of making my first folder, and DAMN I wish I had a mill. I'm kidding, of course, I don't hate you. Just jealous that I don't have your tools. That is without a doubt the best first knife in history. I have always said that if I had a mill and knew how to use it, I could make some wicked folders. I'm still making a nice one now, but with much more effort. Nice job!

thanks. I've made my fair share of mistakes along the way. and if it makes you feel any better I've been collecting tools since I was 18 so it's taken me a while to get to where I'm at.

You should look and see if there are any makerspaces near you that have equipment. I'm going to guess it's a lot cheaper than buying it for yourself. At least short term.

Also..these guys:

Really just need the pocket clip and thumb studs and they are done.

I agree, this has to be the most impressive first knife ever. I guess your brother's is ok, and it can be the most impressive second knife ever? I'd like to think that's s tighter race, but probably not.

Thanks guys. i'm super proud of how these turned out.

That said I am having problems getting the gold one to lock up really nice. When the blade is open, I can push on the lockbar and it'll lock up nice, but it just barely catches when just opening the blade. It was working before I heat tinted the scales, but did have a hair of wiggle, and I'm very afraid that if I take anymore off the lock face it's going to flop around when locked. Any tips or suggestions?

So a bit more progress. Finally got the pocket clips done.
Action shot finishing up the outside profile before adding the contouring:

I tried a new finishing method in my CAM program, and needless to say, i've got some more work to do on the programmign side of things. They came out, but they looked terrible right off the mill.

So I grabbed the files and some sand paper and started binge watching netflix while I fixed them. They look much better now.

I still need to get different mounting screws as they are counterbored for pan heads, but here they are all installed and looking good:

I've been carrying the purple one for about a week now, and I absolutely love this thing! I've definetly made some mistakes along the way, but I really have enjoyed this project. I'm thinking another design may be in my near future.

Good job. As an aerospace tool and die maker for 28 years, I appreciate the work you've done. I used to own a Prototrak M3, and would have loved to have done stuff like this with it...but I wasn't into blades at the time. I was more into making as much money off the machine as possible, and it ran many hours a day. Great machine to program and operate. I still have a Clausing with the M2, but it's in another state on the farm, and not where I'm living currently. Seeing your post makes me want to get back to the farm and give some of my ideas a go. I just love working with different metals, especially exotics.

Nice looking knives. Impressed with the work you put into them. Nice to have a CNC mill to work with.

DON

Thanks guys. Yeah, I'm not nearly talented enough to do this by hand, but I'd like to think i'm fairly talented with my CNC.

I still have 2 more damascus blanks so keep your eyes open as I'll absolutely be making a few more knives from them.
