First knife design ever

I think maybe I could have rephrased "who cares what it's called?" I hope it didn't come off as dismissive. I didn't mean it like that. Do the best you can to describe styles. People will know what you mean. Names of things are always contested. There was a multi-page thread a while back discussing what a choil is or isn't. You get somebody whose opinion most people trust saying it is definitely "X" and then you go research a definition elsewhere and it says it is without a doubt "Y". I am interested in the correct terminologies as well but sometimes there is only agreement to disagree.

No problem. The main reason I think it would be helpful is that for a beginning knife maker - like myself, or the OP - understanding why a design has certain features would assist in making more informed design choices.

Even though there is a lot of overlap there are also pretty pure designs which are very clearly only one thing. For example this...

Is obviously a skinning knife, and this...

Is obviously a fighting knife. Not much overlap. A glossary of those that explains why they are suited to task would be helpful to me - mostly where it's a little less obvious... I'm sure you get it.

I get it. I didn't mean to suggest that someone might group a fillet knife with a style one might refer to as a hunter. Certainly a Kukuri is one style of knife not easily called something else. However there are families of knife styles with features that overlap with other styles with similar size, features, geometries and usage. Where does one draw the line between a bowie and a camp knife or a fighter. Some individuals have more tightly defined parameters that others. I'm sure somebody will come along soon and educate us. I'm staying tuned.
