First knife design help, chef knife

7D95E6E0-44D8-486E-AFE1-6EEB98939AD4.jpeg Circling back, nephew and I have the grinder working pretty good and have been practicing on old mower blades and thin stock trying to work on technique and touch. Summer has been brutal this year so my old arse hasn’t progressed as I should have. About to order a small wheel, which should complete us for a bit.

Here are two plywood roughs we are toying with. Any further thoughts on design? As always, thanks in advance and for sharing your knowledge.

As mentioned, a straight handle would allow him to adjust his hand position as the need arises, what about trying a traditional Japanese straight octagonal design?

Yes the last drawing looks good, I like choppers not rockers as well. Your nephew can tell you what he likes but personally I would leave it slightly less curved from the heel, going forward, just a little straighter before curving in towards the tip. Plus the handle might be slightly skinny now for such a big fellow. My 2 bits anyway, cheers!

Top one.
If he is using a pinch grip the handle more or less just rest in the hand. Simple vs big ergo looking handles tend to be best. Looking good
