Hey guys im planning on making my first knife and would love some input on the design. I opted for a "skinner" shape because its small and i like the shape. I got a bit excited and ordered 01 steel after watching a tutorial on stock removal (which claimed it was good for beginners) before researching that it actually requires some precise heat treatment:thumbdn: but you live and learn so after ive made 2 or 3 knives from the 01 i currently have ill be ordering some 1084 steel which i hear is much more beginner friendly. Anyway to the knife, overall length is just shy of 7", the handle is 4" long and the blade 3".

P.s If anyway knows any good heat treat for blades around Melbourne, Victoria that would be much appreciated! :D

if you can HT 1084, you can probably do O1 as well.

Kudos on designing a reasonable size knife for your first!

as for a HT company, look up hills heat treat in bayswater. theyll take care of it no problem

Cheers mate im in eastern suburbs so bayswater shouldnt be a problem at all :D I heard 01 requires more precise heat treatment to be held at a certain temp for the right amount of time where as 1084 is less...precise? Thanks though!

There are alot of opinions when it comes to HT-ing O1 which are just as well mostly fact. What I mean is that there are a lot of people who say that you "need" precision HT eqiup to HT O1 and others that say that it's a fine forgiving steel to start with. Both are true but it is all relative. If just sarting out 1084 is deff the way to go but you can get a pretty good blade from O1 , however what most people mean when they say you "need" corect HT equip and skills to properly HT O1 properly are talking about geting the absolute most perfomance out of the steel, because O1, when HT correctly, can make a superior knife.

So my suggestion to you is to not be afraid to use the O1 consideing you already have it and you may not get the supe cuttng perfomance from it that can be achieved by proper HT, however you should still be able to get a nice working blade from it

As far as 1084 not needing such a precise HT, this is true beause all you have to do is get the blade up to nonmagnetc, then Heat for a few more seconds and quench with no soak time.

BTW I'm deff not an expert, but this is what I've picked up over the years. Anyway I hope that helps ya out a bit :)
