I am looking to make a knife out of a file. I know this is not the best way but it's what I'd like to do, right now. I was thinking of making my own Micarta for the scales, probably out of an old woodland camo jacket. They would be held on with Corby Bolts (I saw that term on another thread and those were what I had in mind).
Here is my design. I like the one on the bottom. The one with the slight drop point.
Four squares is an inch.
I have a few questions.
1. The grind on the edge of the blade, how wide should that be? (Sorry, I'm still a noob)
2. When I anneal, I will be using a torch. Now, I heat it until a magnet doesnt stick then let it air cool or I quench it in canola oil at about 900 degrees? This thread (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/907667-How-to-Make-a-Knife-From-a-File) says to do in both ways in two posts.
3. Does it have to be a "few gallons" of canola oil? Or will an aluminum disposable pan with a few inches be okay?
4. When I harden I heat it to about 2000 degrees (which is a bright red glow?) then quench in in canola oil again?
5. It doesn't HAVE to be plate quenched does it? What are the chances it will warp?
6. Can I use motor oil instead of canola oil?
That's all I can think of right now.
Any questions comments or concerns about my first blade are appreciated.
Thank You,
