Hi all just wanted to share my excitement :)
After some good advice on a forum here about using some old mahogany for handle scales I finally got it done. Like so many before me I started with an old file for my steel. I was lucky enough to have someone heat treat professionally for me and even with this mystery steel it has worked well and is holding a good sharp working edge.

The most expensive materials were the epoxy and pins because steel and wood were from my own scrap.

Mahogany handle finished with Danish oil. Knife all hand filed (hard slog) as I don't have a grinder other than a really cheap bench grinder and an angle grinder. I also don't have a drill press so hand drilling I think I got one of the pins holes a bit funky. Need suggestions for that please.

Anyway, enough of the excuses. :)
I took the grind all the way through to the back of the blade because the file was a real thick old beast of a thing and I wanted to reduce it. I'm now working on my next knife out of 01 steel billet so won't have that issue again.

Cheers Martin

Great work! I am very impressed by your work! Keep it up. Your knife looks great!

Martin, nicely done! I like the way the wood turned out & your grips look pretty good for not having experience in finishing. Remember, they're all practice, but looking forward to your next one. Drilling without a drill press is a real booger, but just make sure you have a sharp bit & keep working on things. Want to see your next one.

That's an exceptional first knife. I really like the blade shape you went with. Mosaic pins and (hard to tell) liners too? Nice!

Looks pretty good.

You broke the spine with that grind. Next time stop short of that.

Excellent job. Plenty of things to work on for the next one. Keep posting as you build 'em.

Thanks. My next knife will be from flat ground shop bought stock so I get to choose the thickness. This file was pretty chunky and when I stopped the grind lower down it all just felt too heavy and looked too clunky for my my eye. I think the finished blade looks quite decent despite me breaking convention and the weight is even balanced in my hand. I learned from this.

The bit was possibly sharper than my aim :) The pins went through ok but the hole is a hair off round so on one side of the pin I can see more epoxy than the other. I dyed the epoxy black because of the black grain in the wood I thought any showing would blend in better than clear or white. It worked around the tang but not sure around the pins.

Thanks a lot mate. Yes red liners but they aren't as bright as some I've seen. They do look smart in the flesh though. Maybe my photography isn't doing them any favours.
