Update Sheath pictures added below...

Just wanted to post up a photo of my first knife. It is 91/2" OAL and blade is 41/2" the spine is approx. 1/8" thick and is hand rubbed to 600 grit satin finish. I used some 1/4" brass rod for pins and black canvas micarta for the handles. The blade itself is made out of a planer blade recovered from the boneyard at one of the local sawmills. I tempered the blade to take out some of the hardness using the brass rod test. Will see how it all holds up over time. Just also wanted to say thanks for all the information everyone puts up on this and other sites, without it I wouldn't know where to stat.

Here's a pic of the final product, as shown by the scuff marks it has already been put to use. Comments are welcome.

What type of steel?

Well, there is the rub....he doesn't know.

g dub:
That is a nice looking blade....first or tenth. Excellent lines and shape.
Please do yourself a favor and get some known steel that you can HT for number two.

Congrats & very nice looking knife.
I agree with Stacy that it would be worth a few dollars to get a known steel for number two!

No rub. Just missed the part that he didn't know what type of steel. I like that you lined up the pins. I still have a hard time with that.

The phrase "there's the rub" is from Hamlet, and means, "there is the difficulty ( or hard place)". A "rub" was a patch of rough grass on a bowling green which would divert an otherwise good toss.

I just wanted to update and add a couple of sheath pics of the kydex sheath I made for my knife. Thanks for all the comments and encouragement!

I set up my sheath to use with either a small or large tek lok for a variety of carry. I hope its OK that I posted this here and not in the Sheaths sub-forum. Mods feel free to move if you think.

I think you've done a good job on the knife and the kydex both. I enjoy having associations with other knife makers who are able to usually come to my shop. I offer you my experience if you are looking forward to making more. There are a few conditions but I haven't turned anyone away to date. I'm home most of the time. Thanks for the feed back folks.

Frank, Wow! that is a very generous offer and I will definitely be in contact to take you up on it!

All is private if you come. After a visit you will understand why I have some restrictions like I can't drive at night. I am in fact sorry I wasn't able to help you on your first one, but you did real fine on it without me. Frank
