Finished my first knife JUST then and wanted to show you. I don't know what kind of knife you'd call it, ill probably just use it for camping if it keeps a good edge. All critique/constructive criticism is actively encouraged. It still has a few scratches in it that i might get around to getting rid of and i want to engrave a makers mark of some kind. Sorry in advance for the bad photos. dodgy camera, dodgy light.

mystery stainless 6'' blade 11'' total. Wenge handle with brass pins

back pin is a bit off on this side.

Very good for a first. You put some serious effort into it, and it shows. Congrats.

Very suave design , I'd like to know more about this mystery stainless though xD

Looks great but not all stainless steel, like 416, isn't suitable blade material. And those that are usually require a very specific temperature unlike most simple carbon steels (like 1084) that aren't very picky with the temperature. How did you heat treat your blade?

Great workmanship. better looking than my first attempt, but that is partly because it was supposed to be a family project and my dear old dad hasn't put the handle on yet.

Looks like about .125 inches thick (1/8), which is about as thin as you want to get for something that long. Only thing I would have done differently would have been to put a choil on it, but that is only because I am partial to them to keep the edge straight for sharpening.

As for steel, yeah, I don't go for stainless myself just because it is such a pain to heat treat. My first was A2; finally got it heat treated (free, no less, becaue I knew the right person), but I could have heat treated a 10xx steel confidently on my own in the backyard.

But looks like some pretty darn good work for a first attempt. Or second, third, fourth or more.

Nice one, but: "mystery stainless". How about the HT?

I'd like to know more about it too haha. I just found a plate of stainless lying around at work. As for the heat treat...there isn't any, i just wanted to make a knife >.< It was hard as all buggery to file and sharpen so hopefully it will hold some kind of edge (naive i know).

Also i forgot to mention that it's actually PERFECTLY balanced where the blade meets the handle, feels like your just holding the handle and not the whole knife ^.^ (that was a fluke).

Thanks for all the really encouraging comments guys!

Tim.

Nice looking first. Now that you know you can make a knife you can use a known steel and have a really usable knife
