Hello, I'm new here and I kinda wish I had found this place before I had started. I wouldn't have had so many guessing areas of this build. Anyways, I am just curious as to your thoughts about my first. I made my own furnace and it worked surprisingly well and I am super excited to start the next creation. My design was based off of a few of my favorite knives. I really like the Ken Onion "speed bump" so I did my best to incorporate that as well as the front hatchet style I like from certain survival knives. As you all know the first is a major learning experience and I had a lot of fun doing this. Thanks, Kevin

Well, your handle work looks good, nice job on the pins. The blade attempts to be many things, but ends up confusing to the eye. Still, it's a good attempt for a first knife. I'd suggest you make another one, use a good knifemakers steel, such as 1084, and a simple straightward design. Concentrate on getting a good, consistent grind and a tight, well constructed handle, then sand it down and try for a good satin finish. Finally, either heat treat it yourself (read, ask lots of questions beforehand) or send it to a heat treating house. You will learn a ton of things, and want to do more knives, but beware, once the knivemaking bug bites there's no coming back. Good luck! And Welcome Aboard!
 
Without any detail, I can say you succeeded in making a knife shaped object at least. My suggestion for future builds is not trying to incorporate elements of different designs into one, but make one design that works well altogether. Lines need to flow from section to section, etc.

For more critique, we need:
Details? Type of steel, what do you mean furnace? Forge? In other words did you do the heat treatment yourself? Did you hand file, belt sander, etc?

And before Stacy beats me to it, fill out your profile so we can get to know you a little better.

Thank you for all the good words and ancouragement. I used 01 tool steel, almost all hand tools like a file except the occasional help of a belt sander. I used coal and did the heat treatment myself. Turned out well for what I had but also learned a lot and found that the coal actually made markings on the blade while it was in my forge. I like the style that came of this knife. It was difficult at times but like I said it was a major learning process. The bug has bit.
 
yea I got the bug about a week ago. now im looking at spending 1000$ or so next week. have made 5 knives already. was going to make one today but some things came up hopefully ill get to tomorrow.

The $50 knife Shop-not reccomended
This book has a great title, but is NOT gospel. It confused me for a long time.
Forging is NOT necessary; you can file and grind to create a knife (stock removal)

Forget the Goop Quench BS, Even back when they used whale oil, it was still liquid oil.
Use a commercial quench oil & match oil speed to the steel type;
Grocery store canola oil works for some steels like 1084.

Junkyard steel requires skill and experience to identify and heat treat it properly.
Forget Lawnmower blades and railroad spike, start with a new known steel.
Good heat treating needs accurate temperature control and full quench.
You can buy proper steel like 1084FG from Aldo very cheaply, and quench in Canola.

Cable damascus is an advanced project has no place in a beginner’s book.

The grinders are the best thing about this book, but 2x72” belt grinders free plans are now on the web.

Steel
The “welding steel” at Home Depot / Lowes… is useless for knives.
Forget about lawnmower blades ,files and other unknown junkyard steels.
For all the work involved, it is very cheap to buy and use a known good steel.

If you send out for heat treating, you can use
Oil quenched O1, 1095, 1084
Or air quenched A2, CM154, ATS34, CPM154, 440C, plus many others.

For heat treating yourself with minimal equipment, find some Eutectoid steel and quench in Canola oil.

Quenchants for Oil hardening steel
Forget the Goop Quench and Motor oil.

Grocery store canola oil works well enough for your first knife-if you use the right steel like 1084

Brine and water are cheap, and technically correct for "water hardening" steels W1 and 1095 but a fast oil like Parks 50 or Houghton Houghto Quench K are less likely to give you broken blades
If you use water or brine, expect to hear a "tink" and have a cracked or broken blade

Glue – Epoxy
Use a new package of slow setting 30 min to 1 hour, high strength epoxy to attach blades to handles and seal out moisture.
Slow epoxy is stronger and gives you time to work with it.
Surface Prep is vital, drill tang holes/ grind a hollow, roughen the surfaces with abrasive or blasting is best.
Ensure the surface is clean and no oil including fingerprints.
Use Acetone & Alcohol, or Blasting.
Don't over clamp it. Avoid a “glue starved joint” when all the adhesive is squeezed out.

A professional three or four wheel 2x72 is worth it
In my opinion, variable speed and a small wheel attachment are essential on a good grinder.
You can almost always improve tracking with more belt tension. It needs to be way tighter than you first think.

VFD Variable Speed made simple

Step pulleys are not as cheap as you may think
Maska cast steel pulleys are good and well balanced $75 EACH here plus shaft, bearings, belt

It all adds up to about 1/2 the price of a KBAC-27D

I like direct drive with no belts using a VFD and 3 phase motor for about $200 over the price of the step pulleys with much finer control.

Yes you can get cheaper NEMA 1 VFD’s and build your own enclosure

RPM is up to you many are happy with a 1700 RPM running at double speed.

All in all, it is not the worst first knife I ever saw.


The blade is too many different shapes. It would have been far better as a simpler drop point hunter or a skinner.

The handle is pretty well done. It should have a bit more curve along the front part at the ricasso. Kudos on rounding the edges and sides.

With all due respect to Ken Onion, the speed bump is atrocious.
The other bad feature is the recurved blade edge. It would look and cut much better as a plain curved edge.

The pins are not centered , and are too small.

I love Kershaws, and own a couple Onion designs... The speed bump, however, would even get regifted. Always looked like the blade that didn't know what it wanted to be when it grew up...
 
Pins need to have enough surface to hold the scales a bit. 1/8" is the minimum, but 1/4" will have much better grip. Corby bolts ( and Loveless bolts) are even better, as they physically bolt the scales down permanently.
 
Start with a new piece of metal like 1084 and just keep this one as your first learning experience and improve on it how you see fit. And the advice you get from these guys here (not me) are guys who have tons of experience, listening to them would only benefit you

I think it turned out well for your first knife. The thumb stop matches up well with the curve of the edge following the tip and ends up being functional for a skinner. However, the belly of a skinner should drop lower to allow more continuity along the edge. I'm not sure a skinner was your goal but functionally, to the greatest extent, I think that is what you ended up with. I am a proponent of 'form follows function'. Using too many design parameters results in a product that is marginal for many of the parameters. So, IMO you will end up with a better design if you narrow your focus.
 
The handles seem to be nicely contoured going by the second pic. I believe the trailing point simply needs to be toned down a bit and a recurved edge isn't necessarily for this type of knife. The pin size would have been ok-but you should've used more of them, probably around 4 or 5.
