First knife for 10yr old

One of my son's first knives was a USA made Old Timer 34OT. A forum member sent it to him.

He adores that knife even though he has others. He prefers carbon blades that patina over time.

I would recommend a slippie for a first knife. If you are set on the Tenacious, I have one of those and it is a fine knife.

A Case sodbuster would be a good first knife at a lower price point without sacrificing quality. SAKs are good too.

I am picking up a lock back folding knife for my son. I am considering spyderco tenacious and ontario rat 1 folder. I wanted something sturdy, good lock, not too complex to open/close, and w/ some choil or jimping to prevent grip slip, lastly something that can be replaced w/o big loss of $$.
Thanks in advance

i would say get a persistence instead of a tenacious just because its smaller. or a sak.

My first knife was a Pal-36, which I got from my father at the age of six or seven. I got my niece a SAK "MY First SAK". and she called me crying that it wasn't sharp. I went over there with my diamond rods and it turned out what she didn't like was the blunted tip. LOL-She wanted a "real knife".

That being said, I'd get him the Boy Scout Buck 110 clone. It has the BSA logo on it, so if he gets caught taking it to school (like none of us has ever done that), you can tell the principal "Hey I'm sorry, it's a boy scout knife. He must have forgot it was in his pocket". It's hard for even a sheepie to demonize a Boy Scout knife.:)

SAK's are great, one of my first was the Pocket Pal. I think a first knife should be a teacher, something the user can learn with from all angles i.e use, care, resharpening, etc. I like many of the Old Timer brand knives. They are sturdy little buggers, and are made from some good steel thats easy to resharpen do it being high carbon, nonstainless. They will rust of course, but that's part of the lesson to care for it. I still have mine, it's very serviceable despite a broken tip on the largest blade, and has skinned numerous squirrels and rabbits, cleaned fish, whittled thousands of sticks, and carried for miles. Good memories.:)

here in Italy, the first knife for a child is always a victorinox (like the minichamp or something bigger)

also a Opinel is a "must-have" for a child but i don't know if this brand is knowed in US

SAK's are great. They are a timeless design tha your son will use for a long time possibly a lifetime. I like my sak camper a lot. It has enough tools but it doesn't have a ludacris amount of tools.

I got my 7 year old a my first swiss army knife by Victorinox. Has a bottle opener/ screwdriver and large blade that is rounded off but still razor sharp. Plus comes with a lanyard or two.

My 12 year-old daughter first got a SAK, but this Xmas I gave her a Spyderco Spin so that she can appreciate the advantages of a good steel blade.
