Hi Guys...

A good friend of mine's 16 year old son just took and passed his training and hunting certificate.
With a 94% I may add! Same score I got!!! 18 some years ago....

I want to give him a good quality hunting knife for his first blade...

Any suggestions?

Has to be in the lower price range, Cause I'm broke..

But I still want to give him a nice blade...

I'm leaning toward SAK...

For a good inexpensive hunting knife, I'd look into the Cold Steel Master Hunter. I don't have that knife, but I do have the Bush Ranger, which is similar in construction, and it's a good knife for the money.

If you're looking into an inexpensive traditional pocket knife, you might want to check Knifecenter.com. They have tons of options in the sub $40 range. My favorites in that category are the Kabar high carbon (1095 steel) multiblades. Hard to beat for about $25 a pop.

Coldsteel masterhunter is a good knife for the money also puma skinmaster heids has these for $42.00.

ether would be a great gift.

I'll throw in a recomendation for the Spyderco Moran, especially now that they come with those awesome kydex sheaths. I got one for my brother-in-law. He completely field dressed two deer, and it still shaves! He was mucho impressed and so was I.

Folding Hunter : Buck Model 110

Fixed: Buck Pathfinder (Model 105) or Guide (Model 121).

The other suggestions are fine as well, but I am a Buck fan and mine have served me very well for the money spent.

In a slightly large knife (bigger game) I also like the Puma White Hunter or Puma White Hunter II with Kraton handle and much cheaper price.

I too would recommend the stainless CS Master hunter. If you are feeling adventuresome, get some nice wood or micarta slabs and make a "better" handle for it.

Suprisingly, I have found some great deals on handmade knives from "unknown" knife makers on Ebay. Well worth the look.

Hi Guys....

I agree with a lot of your suggestions...

I also have a Moran..They are a nice blade...

Have narrowed the field down to two finalists..

A Sharade Sharp Finger and a RUK SAK...Both exceptional knives for a young man...

Thanks for all your help..

While the price may be a little much, I would recommend one of Marble's small knives such as a Fieldcraft or a Trailcraft. Should be able to pick up a leather handled version for around $65. IMHO these knives are the epitome of a production hunting knife. Useful blade shape, great steel and classic looks all make these winners.

It's only a mistake if you fail to learn from it!

Buck 110 Hunter is a great classic folder, approved for a long time.
Gerber Gator with popular ATS-34 steel blade, Kraton handle is available with young-look nylon sheath.
Both about $40.

I gotta put in a vote for the Buck 110 folding hunter. It's a true classic that he'll use in the field for years. Depending on your money situation, you might even go with a Pete's custom 110 ... check 'em out at www.buckknives.com. There's a wide range of unique choices for blade material, handle material, bolster material, etc. You can really get a one-of-a-kind knife.
Good luck.

CS Master Hunter and Schrade Sharpfinger are excellent. I agree with the4th as well, check out eBay's selection of handmade hunters. A bargain could be had.

Buck 110.

However, if it's too big for a young hunter, try the smaller one (112-Ranger, I think).

I don't know that the large SAK, even with a lock, would qualify as a hunter. YMMV.

WOW!!! That is a good deal. Those are GREAT prices. You should buy all of them. Hurry, hurry!

hehehehehehe

RH, I doubt 16 is so young that their size would make them unable to use a normal fixed blade knife.

I'm 15, and I'm six feet tall. Pretty weird for a Chinese guy huh? I'm part Dutch though (I'm part of the Chutch race).

Well, I'd say either a Ka-Bar or a Buck 6" Special.
