First knife for my son, which one?

It may not be appropriate for a 9 year old to have a pocket knife on him all the time, what with sheeple and all, and if you make it easy for him to carry it he will. I would. Maybe a fixed blade is a better choice because it can only be warn at times when it would be appropriate. He might forget he had a folder in his pocket and, oh horror!, talk it to school. Next thing you know Michael Moore is there with a camera and you are on the 6 o’clock news.

SCREW Moore! If it was my son, he would get the Cadet with the proper training and admonition not to take it to school. There is not a knife made that should be taken to school by any 9 year old. If he has not demonstrated an obedient character, he shouldn't have a knife yet. Period.

When I was 8 years old in third grade we were supposed to take something to school to sharpen our pencils and it was not pencil sharpeners, most kids just had a razor blade wrapped in paper and some had pen knives, I got my first pocket knife then, a cheap boy scout pattern.

It's been a while, that was rural Mexico in 1960, but still if 8 year old boys and girls could handle a knife then they can do it now.

If you want Buck I vote for the cadet, if you want a SAK I vote for the Victorinox recruit, both are good, simple and inexpensive. I gave SAKs to my daughters when they were young, times have changed here too and yes once one was confiscated at school, luckily we don't have "zero tolerance" here and my wife just had to go and get it back.

Not to get off topic but, that is cool. Here in the U.S. we would get kicked out of school for having a weapon.

I went with a SAK for my 7 year old. My First Victorinox Plus model. Sharp main blade with blunt tip, saw, can opener/screwdriver and the ever present tweezers and toothpick.

It is hard to go wrong with an SAK.

Lock is overrated IMO. We have all cut ourselves with knives including slipjoints. We learn, quickly.

I have a 9 year old who is not coordinated enought to open and close a knife safely. Wait until he is ready. BTW, my first knife at 10 yrs was a 6" fixed blade. That wasnt a bad idea.

Either a Cadet or Knight, and a SAK should be like winning the lottery for him. My dad gave me a Boker congress when I was a kid, , the one with the bird dogs on it, along with some old Colonial barlows, and I thought I had won the mega millions!
