First knife for my son

Any buck made knife. My first knife was a old timer pocket knife. I remember it since I couldn't even get the blades out with my fingers. The first second knife was one of the buck knife folders. Big guy with a belt holster. Skinned my first deer with that. Then I got a Gerber knife which I really liked which ended up in me getting 2-3 more. I don't think many like Gerber here but for deer hunting I had zero issues with.

I would do as said...

Buck knife would be my too choice
But it's nothing wrong with looking at the Gerbers for outdoors use. Im not sure I would get a 10 year old a flipper knife yet. Just to many things that could go wrong or even make him want to take and show off to his friends. So maybe stick with a small fixed blade he can put on his belt.

I've known quite a few real-deal respectable hunters/outdoorsmen who found the Gerber Gator folder plenty effective back in the day.

Yes the gator was in my opinion one of the best hunting knives. It's funny cause I was about 10 when my dad got me one. He passed away last year so it's a memory I'll always have.

Lots of great ideas above...just to throw out one more (a bit more expensive), the Finch 1929

Love the knife, thanks for pointing it out. I may order one myself. I just can't see spending that much on a kid's first knife though can you? You know he is going to lose it. :(

Or cut himself on it... like I did ! They include the bandaid for a reason

Gerber gator comment brings back memories as I bought one as a kid.

I agree with a swiss army knife in something simple. Everyone has to eventually own one, might as well make it the first.

Otherwise I vote for a lockback in 3" blade like a delica or kabar dozier. I had a bunch of bucks and gerber lockbacks growing up. 3" makes it legal in more places and lockback because kids don't need to be fidgeting with knives.
