If I made a knife 10 years ago, and build a few since then, and come back to that first knife with new tools and knowledge. . .Does it still count as my first knife or does it go back in the queue as the 6th?

Post a pic or two so we can tell you. :D

I don't wanna post pics. . . .It's really nasty and ugly. I made it from a file using a 4" angle grinder and wrapped the handle with rawhide. Fine, I'll post pics tomorrow.

I suppose this means it exists, now to just finish what I started 10 years ago. Looking at it, I can't believe I said it was finished.

Hey, its a start. Thats what I love about knifemaking....it pushes your creativity everytime.

I look forward to seeing what comes from your efforts. They wont finish themselves, so just get to designing and trying to work it out!

You have had 10 years to think about this:thumbup::D

Hope you get to finishing them soon.

Best of luck,

Chris

That's quite the shank. Did you anneal it, or just grind on it "as is"? I think you'll have much better luck starting with a nice clean piece of 1084 for "Number 2".

I think you should keep it as is and mount it above your workbench as a reminder of where you started. If anything make a new one in the same shape...just make it nicer. I think it's important to see your old work.

It’s good that you keep your first
Looking forward to see #6

Best regards

Well, I have decided to "finish" the knife. I had an idea in mind when I started it 10 years ago, but neither the tools nor understanding to even come close to finishing it. While my tools are still lacking and understanding is only the beginning, I feel I may have a better chance at finishing it. Here is the current progress after 10 minutes. Can someone tell me the best way to protect the blade from rusting while working on it?

ETA, looks like you already took that bacon off and started. Just keep at it!

I am a rookie so my opinions dont matter much.

Use a sharpie to lay your design out better on the blade as a reference. Then just file away until you start seeing what appeals to you.

I would take that bacon off, give it a good sanding and bust out the files if you have them. Ernie Swanson did a WIP here using nothing but files and he turned out a fine blade. Just saying, it can be done with limited tools and dedication:thumbup: After your done HT'ing Tempering, filing, sanding just wipe it down with oil and it will prevent rust.

Here, you can see the modifications I have made. Slightly re-flattened the edges, although some gouges were just too deep. This was a lesson to not use round edges to try to make something flat. I tried a hollow-ground edge, but it was rather rough from the grinding wheel, so I re-flattened it. The top section is that edge attempt. I also got rid of the rawhide handle and went with a simple cord wrap. I think it will fit my wife's hand better.

Now that looks a lot better! Good job, now go make another one!!!!

Oh come on, let me bask in the glory of calling one finished for . . .Never mind, I already have 2 others that I am in the handle stage on.

Any suggestions what kind of oil to use for long term storage? I didn't even wipe it down when I put it in the gun cabinet 10 years ago.

LOL, thats how it begins buddy. Welcome to the sickness:thumbup:

I use Weapon Shield for lube, but any gun lube, WD40 should work. If you have some Rem-Oil that works too. I just love the smell of Weapon Shield:D Hints of Cinnamon rule.

Looking forward to seeing your 2nd, 3rd and 50th!

Congrats on your first blade.

Chris

Plenty of Rem-oil at home. I was thinking of De-Oxit 100. I have a small can, it's used for preventing oxidation on electronics contacts.
Well, the 2nd and 3rd are long gone to other people I haven't seen in 10 years. Knife #4 is a remake of #3, only with better tools and titanium this time. I think I will add some files to my tools for #6. I just sold my old video projector on eBay, so I have $150 to spend on tools/materials. I was thinking of getting some cpm s30v, although I was also considering getting some cheaper metal, 440 perhaps.
