Hello,

So I've been ever so slowly progressing through my first knife project. I'm making a handle for a Helle Harding laminate blade blank.

The guard is a piece of 6Al-4V Titanium. I'm working mostly without power tools, so it took a sweet long time to cut out of the bigger block, square up all the surfaces, and file it to shape. The slot was a real challenge because of how hard the material is to work on with small narrow files, but I'm pretty happy with the fit-up for my first attempt. I don't know how tight Nick Wheeler's slot is in real life, but my virgin slot is pretty tight. Just kidding of course, there's no way I'm comparing my work to his. I did pick up one of Mr. Bruce Bump's file guides, which I highly recommend, and I don't think I could have done such a neat job without it.

The spacers are black G-10 and copper and the handle material is stabilized black palm. The butt is going to get a copper hammer-textured cap.

It's slowly coming along, but most of the hard work is over.

I owe a lot to this forum and all the great people that freely share their knowledge and experience, especially the professionals who take the time to make wonderful WIP threads that are both informative and inspiring. I appreciate it greatly!

Any comments, critiques, and suggestions welcome.

How thick is your blade steel? I believe that your grind is very short in height. It might seem alright but it means you will have a very wide "V" edge which means a knife that isn't near as sharp as it should be. Frank

That is a "scandi" grind and they can be exceptionally sharp. They're great for woodwork, do just fine at general tasks and will perform far better than most people will expect.

It's a Helle Harding blade blank and it came with a scandi grind. I'm going to tweak it on the sharpening stones, but that's going to be the last step.
