First knife Purchase

I bought a Sabre jack knife at the drug store for $1.49, a handsome sum for a kid my age. It's long gone, but I found this one in the bay that is as close to a duplicate as my memory will allow. The handles are genuine MOP (Made of Plastic).

I was lucky to have been raised being gifted knives from a very young age. The first one I bought was a yellow handled Imperial folding fishing knife with scaler/hook disgorger blade and hook sharpener on the side. Was decades ago, but that knife went on many adventures when I was a kid.

I have posted this many times as this topic comes up fairly often. My apologies to those who have already seen it more than they care to.

Purchased from an ad in the back of a 1971 issue of Boys Life magazine. A friend and I saved up our lunch money, put the cash in an envelope and mailed it off. Without internet or tracking numbers back then, the anticipation was pure horror. I checked the mailbox everyday. We were both 10 years old.

I found the ad a few years ago on some website that had images of past issues with images of every page as well. Can’t recall the name of the website but it was a real trip down memory lane. I’m sure it must be still out there on the interwebs.

I honestly don’t remember caring how big or small the knife was. We just wanted that super cool knife. lol.

I bought many Pakistan specials from the flea market with my dad's participation. They wouldn't sell me knives until my dad showed up.

The first decent one I had was a Buck lock back. I don't recall the exact model, my dad gave it to me when I was five. I sharpened it to the spine...

The first decent one I bought myself was shortly after I joined Bladeforums back in 2004 or so. Spyderco Centofante 3. Passed it along to someone who needed a decent knife a long time ago.

I've posted this before.

This was the first knife I bought with money I saved. I got it at a sporting goods store in Hunter Mountain NY in the mid-1970's.
They were all displayed on the wall, I picked the biggest knife I could afford (I was 16, so that's how my decision process worked back then).

I used this knife to skin the first deer I harvested and only got halfway through before it dulled. I had to finish the job with a Case folding hunter my parents had bought me the previous Christmas.

I was given several knives as a child in the 1960s . . .and cut myself with every one of them, but I do not recall actually paying for a knife intill I was a young adult. Interestingly, to me anyway, is that I don't recall actually making the purchase. It was probably a Buck 110 or 112 or maybe an SAK with a B oy Scout style set of tools . . .whatever, at the time, it was just not that big-a-deal and the moment passed un-noticed.

Later knife acquisitions, particularly since 1998 or so, are notable as they were significant outlays and were meant as gifts. Some of these purchases I have written about here, but not my first ever.

My first knife I bought was an old Anvil brand (made by Colonial) stockman back in the 80's. I loved that knife, cut myself with it (of course) and lost it. Thinking about that knife and trying to find a replacement is what rekindled my knife chasing
