for a long time I've been contemplating making my first knife...I'm gonna give it a crack, I've heard several people doing this by using old files, I will either do this or try to lacate a pre softened piece of 1095, (any help on that would be cool) other thant that I have a design but no idea what to do after that I understand the blade steel can be softened in the oven, than ground and frequently cooled..What next??? and I'd like to put a scandi grind on it...any thoughts? any help would be greatly appreciated.

well im also a newb to knife makeing but u can buy anealed 1095 from jantz supply in 12 or 18 inch lengths hope that helps some

My advice is to read the "sticky" threads at the top of this forum.. The one that Dan Gray put together has a lot of information that will put you well on your way...Good luck.

Rescue,

Read first, gain knowledge, then give it a crack. You will enjoy what you are experiencing, more, if you understand
some of the basics of knifemaking.
Start out with a known steel and go from there.

Enjoy, Fred
