Here is what I am thinking of. The steel is 1084 Aldo 1/4 right now thats all I have as a friend gave me this piece. I think I want the handle about 1/2 inch longer after getting it in hand. Anyway what do you guys think and what should I change before I start? The other question I have is what type of grind would you recommend for my first try?

Quarter-inch is in my amateur opinion rather thick for the size blade you have but it's what you have so it's what you use. Maybe a hollow (concave) grind would be better to deal with the thickness but I've never done a hollow grind personally, only flat grinds on my Sears 2x42. What sort of grinder do you have to work with?

Regarding the design, you have a right-angle inside corner where the bottom of the handle reaches the ricasso/blade. This could be a place where a crack could start during the heat treatment process. You could could change it by rounding it up into the handle area, making a finger grove.

#1 The top image is the profile you made.
#2 shows the suggested rounding and finger notch.
#3 shows what it might look like if you changed the dropped point a little bit in an attempt to make the lines flow better.
#4 shows it with an extra half-inch added to the handle.

Hope this is of some help.

Thanks for taking the time to write up a good answer. My grinder is the Craftsman 2x24 as well.

Ok I stretched it out and added the finger notch. Im liking this version much better.

Paint stick #2 is a huge improvement. Obviously it is flat and only a cutout but hold it in your hand, change to various grips and see how it feels. If it "just feels right" then make it. Be sure to update us on your progress.

I like #2 as well.
Make a good thong hole in the end of the handle and add a thick lanyard after you've finished.
It will give your little finger something to hold on to.
