After lurking around here I got the urge to make my first knife, or part of one. The blade is a Jantz in D2. The wood is Chechen and nickel pins. Its not perfect but I think it turned out pretty good.:)

That happens to be one of my favorite designs they offer. Great job for your first! Here are a few that I've done with the same pattern:

And a matching pair in Cocobolo:

Thanks! How did you like working with that Chechen? Is it very hard/dense?

The cocobolo doesn't need stabilizing and the redwood burl was unstabilized in a care package from Mark at BurlSource. I "home stabilized" it with multiple soakings of thin CA glue with a final CA glue finish.

At first I only had hand tools...The Chechen scales were 3/8" thick. I hand sanded on and off for 3 hrs and barely sanded off 1/16" on one scale. I then bought a belt sander :) .Things got much easier after that. Can't really compare the Chechen to anything else though. It does seem as hard as concrete when hand sanding. I finished it off with 400 grit, then white jewelers rouge on the dremel and some mineral oil.

Nice looking knife. Do you have some files? They will take material off faster than sand paper.

My favorite file for rough shaping is a 4-in-1. Just wish I could find one longer than the standard size.

Worked on a second blade. This one went a little smoother. Gave this one to my bro :) Same Jantz pattern in Bocote.

Ive not done one of those yet, looks good. May I offer an aesthetic suggestion for a similar one?

Make your spacers a bit more symmetrical. Starting from the forward handle cap I would do metal/red/buffalo/red/metal then at main buffalo section metal/red/metal before and after the buffalo spacer.
