So this is my first knife from stock removal. Nothing special but it's straight and hair shaving sharp. So I have used it only a couple of times in the kitchen on fruits n veggies.
I think I am gonna like this...

Better than my first try.

Pins are not spaced even.
Handle needs to be rounded more.
Curves on handle seem odd at back bottom of knife handle.

The idea behind the somewhat odd handle is that I like a pinch grip in the kitchen. So the little bump is to hold my pinky ring and middle finger with the middle finger in the finger notch. I like the handle but yes it could be rounded more. And one scale is a tad thicker than the other. Don't have a drill press yet so yeah pins are off because they are not perfect straight up and down with my hand drill.

Nice first one.
What steel and what wood did you use?
Saw blade... I treated it like 15n20 but honestly don't know the steel. Heat treated only the edge about half inch up or so. Just did a flat grind, spine to blade then hand sharpened
Ash wood from the wood pile for scales.

I think it's a really nice looking first knife, good job!

I really like the look of the ash scales. May have to replace later if the wood hadn't dried enough yet though. It looks like the handle angle and butt are a bit low to comfortably use the backend of the blade on a cutting board? Not sure if that's important depending on how long the blade is and intended uses. Nice job.

I too stop too soon on the handle rounding. I do it cause im afraid of ruining the handle. Do it by hand and u can keep going.

Nice looking.

You should take the very end of the edge and dull the last 1/4". Then slightly round the heel so there is not a very sharp point at the end.

On the next one, center the pins better.

Looks great. How much hand sanding did it take you? Just got my belt sander (2*60) off Craigslist and my first 1084 and 1095 stock will be here later this week. I don't my first knives will look as good as yours.

Not much I used 80 120 220 belts (with a 3x36 belt grinder clamped in a vice, used a bucket of water after every pass...) then hand sanded 400 wet and then scotchbrite. I should have went to 800 1000 but didnt have them.

HA my first three just got filed away into the circular file. Was trying to correct bad grinds on the plunge lines and just messed them up more. Hopefully knife # 4 turns out better.

My problem is I spend hours filing and grinding and trying to make it just perfect and when I think I'm doing good I come on here and browse the for sale section to see what the pro's are doing then I start to see all the issues mine have and go back and start trying to fix them and end up messing them up. Number 4 just got cut out from stock last night and that's it. I'm going to finish this one for sure.

I'd be proud of that knife Atepac for a first, least you finished it

PS. Check out the Nick Wheeler Channel on youtube. That dude has set me straight on some of the ways I was doing things incorrectly.
