Well, here goes ...

Shown is my first attempt at a fixed blade knife. Pre-made blade & bolster. Red oak handle material with a red fiber card liner. The fiber card was glued to the oak with contact cement, and the handle materials were glued with acra-glass. The mosaic pins were cobbled together from tubing found at the local hobby shop and filled with thin super-glue to fix it together. It was fun and I have another one on the bench ready to get started!

Great start!! It won't be long untill you are making your own blades..:D It's a slippery slope that you are on, soon enough you will be down in the quagmire with the rest of us knifemaking junkies!!

That turned out great! I really like the pins you made! What did you use to finish the handle? Or is that "as sanded" wood? Any chance of a spine shot to show off the fiber spacer? -Matt-

It ain't all that pretty. It's not near as clean as the work I've seen here, but it was fun making it.

The finish is just tru-oil rubbed in and then covered with johnson's paste wax. I didn't fill the grain, as I like the natural look and texture.

I might play with home stabilizing or coating the wood with super-glue or polyurethane on the next one.

Good stuff, nailcreek! Welcome to the sickness. We look forward to hearing about your forge-build which should be any day now:D .
By the way, my Dad's from Wausau. Pretty country around there.

Nailcreek, you can't compare your work to most of the others seen on these forums. You'll drive yourself nuts if you do. All you can do is have fun and try to improve. (emphasis on the FUN part!)

Thanks for the info on the handle finishing. I think I'm gonna use gun stock wax to seal my oak handle and then finish it with the Tru Oil. Did that once with a Koa handle and had good results. -Matt-

nailcreek and grease-man, we gotta get together and BS about knives one of these days. I'll show you guys the knives and KSO's I've made, but have been too embarassed to post pics of, LOL. I had no idea there were other knife guys in WI let alone Wausau!

In any case I really like that red-oak handle, nailcreek. I love oiled guitar necks; I bet that handle feels similar.

Very nice, and a good usable shape. It won't be long and you'll be grinding thumbprints off-err I mean your own blades!:D

nailcreek, I'm right in Wausau. Seriously, drop me an email if you want to talk shop in person. BYOB ;)

Cool, grease-man, keep in touch! The e-mail addy in my profile is current, feel free to drop me a line.
