Found this again laying in the shop. This was the first knife I made. Seeing some of the first knives posted by some of the new makers I thought I'd post this to make them feel them really good.
I spent hours with an angle grinder shaping a file into my "first blade". Then several more hours sanding it. But the best I could do, within around 10 hours of work was to get a fat convex grind. It was pretty, I'll say that much. But that's about it. It took a really sharp edge, too.
But it snapped in half when my buddy dropped it on the garage floor. Hmm...I thought to myself.
Later, I decided to read a book and learned that you are supposed to anneal it, work it, then HT it!
Doe! **slap forehead very hard**
That was a few years ago. Now I've over taken our two car garage and it is set up specifically for knife making. I'm will have to move soon, so I can get a shop and get my wife off my back....
its better than my first. I still have two of my first three. and they both get used often. the third broke, something about never being tempered or some such craziness .
I visited your sight. Nice work. I noticed that your best knives are at the end of the list of pictures. You might want to reorganize it, so your best work is showcased upfront. Just something I noticed.
And good luck in the Navy. I was an AT2 on the USS Independence and USS Kittyhawk, both out of Yokosuka, Japan. 95-00
Better memorize your general orders, forwards and backwards, before boot camp. You'll save yourself lots of push ups if you do, and you'll hate life if you don't.
