First Knife.

Doesn't the 110 use 420HC steel though? How does it compare to 154CM steel that benchmade uses (I was considering a 530...). Really, the only reason I don't go out and buy the 110 right now is because
A) shops are closed :p
B) I'm not sure how good the steel is.

If the 420HC is alright then i think i have found my knife :)

If you like the Buck 110,go custom shop. Then you can get one with a S30V blade.I did and I like it a-l-o-t!!

I have been browsing for a bit now about the various brands that are out there and heres what i think:
- Don't mean to sound like an idiot but spyderco's designs don't seem to appeal to me. I have no doubt that they are great knives though (same goes for Kershaw).
- Zero Tolerance and Emerson seem a bit TOO tough. Like i said, i won't be cutting through brick walls or anything :P
- Love the benchmades...
- The Buck 110 looks like a good place to start (thank you babakanoosh) but how does it compare to the Cutback and the Pilot (i really like the design of the cutback and the pilot)

Anyone know other benchmades along the same line as the 710 (cheaper would be nice :S). The AXIS lock looks MAD!!!

Thanks for the heads-up Chris. I will check out the Wellington surplus website (might even drive there tomorrow). Which Opinel should i be looking out for (Series 6, 9, 10, 12)?

I suppose It's just between:
  • Buck 110
  • Buck Pilot
  • A Decent Benchmade?

Thanks for the help so far guys (sorry if i'm asking too many questions)

welcome to the forums!

no apology necessary. do you have any preferences re:

-lock type, if any
-steel type
-size
-blade shape

etc...?

emerson knives, while very tough, carry quite well. many have a narrow profile and most are fairly thin and light. most are within your price range as well.

most of the zt line are too large for me, and i tend to carry folders with at least a 3.5" blade.

benchmade makes fine products, but like you with spyderco, very few of their designs appeal to me. even so, i often recommend them to new members based on quality and a variety of price points, sizes, styles, and materials.

I went to the Wellington store to check out what they had there and came back with an Opinel 10. I had a look at the 110 and the few benchmades that they had there.

The 110 looks and feels great (I love the weight). Only thing i don't like about it is the lock (why place it at the bottom of the blade?).

The range of benchmades there is pretty small although if i do decide to get one i will probably get it ordered.

As for my preferences:
Blade size: 3-4 inches. anything above 4 inches is too big and anything below 3 inches is way to small.
Blade type: I would like something sturdy that won't break if it's subjected to a bit of punishment. I don't know too much about knife steels though...
Blade style: I like a blade that is sleek (like the buck pilot) and something that doesn't have too many bits that stick out like the finger hole on the spyderco's. I don't mind the benchmade 710 and the griptilian.

I would get a buck 110 but like i said before: I'm not sure how much punishment the 420HC blade can take. My second choice would be a benchmade 530, followed by a 551 griptilian.

P.S. The opinel is great! Except for the fact that I'm now knee deep in sliced up paper...

Congrat's on the new knife.

Actually getting the opportunity to make a 'hands-on' decision is a big advantage over only making decisions based upon online photo's and specifications.

Good luck for your future purchases.

The steel on the 110 is plenty tough enough, only "steel snobs" (and I can be one of them... sometimes) would disdain it. It all lies in the heat treat, and buck does this excellently.

The thing to be aware of with cheap steels is that it takes more stropping to remove the wire edge. While a wire edge feels sharp, its brittle and when it breaks off you are left with a blunt edge. Properly strop and polish the wire edge out and edge retention is hugely increased. Edge retention for me is only an issue if carving a lot of seasoned wood, in which case I prefer carbon steel like on a opinel because I can sharpen it little and often.

I have decided to pick up a Buck 110! I can't buy it online since I am still waiting for my debit card to arrive (-_-) so i have to pay $130AUD to get it from retail stores.

I can't thank you guys enough for your help!

P.S: Once the card arrives, I might pick up an Emerson in the near future. the CQC-10 and CQC-7 look sweet and are (apparently) rock solid...
