I'm looking for a good quality knife to carry, and also for defense just incase. The lower the price the better, but i don't want to get something i'm going to have fail on me. I like the Benchmade 940 a lot but its kinda out of my price range. Any suggestions on what to get?

Well, it all depends on what you're going to be using it for, and how much your actually willing to spend. The more info you provide, the more helpful we all can be.

BTW- I would suggest looking at Spyderco knives, many of us here will agree that you can't get better 'bang for your buck'

Welcome to Blade Forums

trying to get it under 100, i like to have on for mostly everyday use(cutting rope, ect) and i moved to a crappy apartment for college, so something protect me after i learn how to use it the right way.

Welcome to BF!
The 940 is definitely worth it if you can afford it, otherwise i would recommend a Benchmade Mini Grip(556) or Full size Grip(551)

Don't plan to use a knife for self defense unless you are properly trained, otherwise you will hurt yourself.
I recommend: Delica or Endura waved models, Benchmade Grip and Mini-Grip models, or just about all of the Kershaw line as they (Kershaws) are high quality but great prices.

If you want something purely for cutting performance, can't go wrong with a Caly 3. It was one of my first "higher-end" knives that I picked up, and it's a wonderful slicer. One-handed opening is nice, leaf-shaped blade leaves much belly for many cutting tasks, and it's so thin and light.

Your location will be imperative to a proper recommendation...law comes first.

I will recommend a Kershaw Leek in G-10 or a Kershaw Shallot depending on local blade length laws...I would recommend a small section of grip tape on the Shallot.

Both will run under $60 iirc.

In order of recommendation:

(They are all Spydercos)

1. Tenacious PE - one of the best "bang for your buck" folders on the market
2. Delica 4 PE - probably Spyderco's best-selling folder of all time. Get it
either in black or foliage green with VG-10 steel.
3. Endura 4 PE - larger version of the Delica; same color and steel
recommendation as the Delica
4. Salt 1 PE - unique blade-steel that is rust-proof; about the same overall
size as the Delica; can be had with a black or yellow (high-vis) handle.

As far as non-Spyderco and inexpensive, take a look at the Kabar Dozier Folders - very good folder for about $20 with decent steel and can also be had in a myriad of colors.

if you really wana spend as little money as possible and still have a decent blade, i say go for a spyderco tenacious or a kershaw skyline. if willing to spend up to 100, maybe a g10 tyrade, endura, benchmade full grip, or a RAT izula if youd like a smaller fixed blade.

delica
mini grip
skyline is a great low cost knife
leek

all are great choices,,

+1 to Joe's suggestions.

I got it down to the benchmade 551,Kershaw Shallot, and RAT izula. I think im going for the 551, but i really like the rat izula, but seems kinda impractical for everyday use but it looks really cool.

If you got a Kershaw shallot in one of the supersteels (S110V/ZDP189 composite) it'd be a better performer than the grip. I just don't appreciate the plastic feel of the grip. Many on the forums here have liked the Izula, but you really can't go wrong with any of the three.

Spyderco Tenacious.
Best bang for your buck in my opinion.

If you can go for something more costly than that, go for the Kershaw Junkyard Dog II CB.

i ended up geting the rat izula in pink, only problem is that theres no belt clip but i can make do. cant wait for it to get here.
