What is the best "FIRST KNIFE" for kids you think?
I think Victrinox or Wenger "Solder" best.
It have good utility, sharp, resharpenable, stianless, and tough blade.
And other tools are usual for child, too.
Next,Best choice is Microtech USSOCOM and Buck Nighthawk.

I hope,If I can be given a son,I will present him Randall M1-7".
But forbid to use it until he graw to use it safe.
A boy must yearn to"My knife",it is good bait for education.

And What was your first knives, too?

Mine was a SAK Tinker model. I've still got it, can't beat the bottle opener for my Newcastles..

I think I got in around the 6th grade. I've been meaning to ask dad when he got that for me.

My first was an old Case XX skinner owned by my Great Grandfather and given to me by my Grandfather. The blade was all scratched up because my Great Grandfather was damn near blind and he would lay the flat of the blade on the honeing stone and grind it to get an edge.

ohayo gozaimasu ishida san, Ii desu ka?

I too, hope to spoil my children (kodomo?) with knives in the future. I think the first knife should be a Victorinox, that way I hope he/she will learn that a knife is a tool first and foremost. Teaching the virtues of sharpening will be next ofcourse.

Chic,

Some time ago I started a thread to get some ideas for my daughter's first knife as a present for her 8th birthday. As you can see the thread contains some great suggestions but she finally decided on a Wegner SAK with a locking blade. She was thrilled with the knife when it arrived (even more so when I got the blade engraved) and I think it was the best choice in the end. The Wegners are a little smaller than the Victorinox and so more suitable for a child's hand. BTW she has used the scissors more than the blade, perhaps I chould have bought her a Micra. I am reminded that I promised she would do a review of it, must talk to her about that

Take care,

Don't worry that the world might end tomorrow....in Australia it's tomorrow already.

The first knife I got was an old stockman folder with metal scales (well...scale, one was missing) with carbon steel blades. Oh yeah, there were stains gallor. I lost it somewhere in Tahlequah, OK.

The first knife I bought was a little tiny CS lockback in San Mai III...still have that one, though the blade's too thick for utility use on a knife that small.

I think a first knife should have some sort of locking mechanism...I know on to occasions my Grandfather's Old Timer folded up on me. Yes children should learn knife safety from an early age, but those small hands tend to have a little less control.

Just My Two Cents...Can I Have My Change?

How about a CRK&T Mirage? or a Spyderco Delica? Both great knives, well made, not a big outlay of cash in case they get lost or abused. My kid`s first "real" knife was a Spyderco Endura. Now that he can appreciate quality steel and ergonomics, he carries a serrated BF Native. (I thought it was a great choice.)

I think it was a Imperial Scout knife with black plastic scales but it was a long time ago and countless knives in between. But I'm pretty sure it was.

My first knife was an official Boy Scout knife, and I still think they are probably the best knives to give to little boys and girls. But I would not give one to a child until after I have taught them how to use it safely.

Mine was a 4 blade Camillus Boy Scout knife. I loved that knife. It was lost, and replaced by their US Army knife. Same knife, but all steel. More mature.
GET YOUR SONS INTO SCOUTING!!! I cannot possibly begin to say how much it has influenced my life. It has affected my attitude, my people skills, my morals, my social life. It is by FAR the most valuable activity you can have a boy do. I can't tell you how important it is to me. Sorry to get so off topic, but I feel it is worth addressing.

Oh, I forgot to make suggestions. Hehe.
The first knife does not have to be expensive by any means. It should certainly serve multiple functions. It should not be a one handed opener AT ALL. We all know how addictive a flickable knife is <Sheepish grin>. A child is even more susceptible to such habits. Next thing you know, they stick it in their backpack, someone steals it at school, and something BAD happens! I'm seeing suggestions for Spydercos which go against ALL of this.
It should be durable, and easily replaced. It should also NOT be razor sharp. Like I said, those 4 blade Camillus knives are great kids' knives, and just as great for adults.

my first knife was a imperial shrade scout knife,I also spoil my kids and grandkids with good quality knives, they all have at least 25 good knives ,my firt grandson probley has at least 100.every time he comes to my house he goes to my file cabinets and picks out a new knife, the younger kids love the new liner locks in the last 3 months he has taken all my ken onion kershaws, guess I beter order some more, the point of this message is to give your kids the very best knife you can afford, and teach them that they are a tool, teach them knife safety and maintaince.

WHAT??? How old is that first grandchild? MAN!!! I'm not gonna even touch on those numbers. That just absolutley blows my mind.
But giving them good knives that they won't appreciate? And telling them to get the best knife they can afford? Well, I can afford almost any knife I want... but I am planning on going to Duke, and want a nice car. With all due respect, I think you are spoiling the living hell out of those kids. I have my grampa's nightstick, which my father gave me after my grampa passed away. I also have his cufflinks. These kids are getting $150 knives. That is WAY overboard.

Howie

PS: You wouldn't by any chance be considering adopting a grandchild, would you?

I got a SAK Camper. I still have the knife and I got it at 7. Make sure your kids appreciate it and don't let them lose it, responsibility is key.

Doesn't Case make a special model called "My First Knife" or something like that? Someboady get Danny from 888 Knives R Us in here as he would know.

When my Grand Son was born I got him this Case knife. It is the CA-1001 MY FIRST CASE TIN/KNIFE SET. He was just a week old when I went to NC to see him and put the tin in the crib with him.
He is a little older and his mother will still not let him play with it. Maybe because he is just 3 now.
I hope he keeps it and thinks of me when he looks at it for years to come.
