hey guys, I'm new on here. I've just been looking around on here for a few days. I plan on making a knife and starting on it in the next couple of weeks. I was wondering what your thoughts were on Green River knife Blanks were? I was thinking about starting on one of these and using some type of wood for the handle? Thoughts on what to use? Eventually i would like to make one with a whitetail antler handle and was wondering how to go about that? Do I split it and ground it down to the tang, or use a hidden tang on it? What do you think? Any help would be appreciated as I obviously don't have much of an idea as to what I am doing haha. Thanks in advance!

I put handles a couple GR blanks a few years ago. They're actually pretty nice. Some type of carbon steel (I don't know the exact alloy) that takes a nice edge; they were evenly-ground, too. Very reasonably-priced as well. Go for it. :)

Welcome! If you fill out your profile with your age, occupation, and location, there may be someone close by willing to help you out. Read through the sticky's as I am sure you have already, some dead links, but still some excellent info.

As far as wood for the handles go, on the cheap side you can go with oak from the hardware store, or walnut, neither of which need to be stabilized an can be quite good looking. If buying stabilized wood, be leary of fleabay sellers who state their wood is stabilized, its a crap shoot as to the quality you get. Most of the knife supply sites have good stuff and check the exchange forum here as well. Several member here sell wood scales and blocks of very good quality.

Don't forget to post pics of it when you get it done!

Have fun-
