First Military - Ti or G10?

OK, my birthday just came, and I've wanted a Military for a while but just haven't needed one so it got put off to the side. I noticed in the 2010 Spyderco catalog it says the Ti is limited production.

The G10 version is lighter, less expensive, has better grip, and I would be more prone to getting it dirty and really using it.

The Ti looks nicer, and has the R.I.L./Framelock, but it's more expensive and is a little more slippery. It's also heavier and I would probably baby it more.

If I do get the G10, I might wait a little to see if they come out with an M4 blade version in plain G10.

What do you guys recommend? Go for the Ti, or the regular version? Or wait it out? (I do know the Para2 is coming out soon too)

If it was me, I would go with the titanium. The G10 is a very nice knife, but I have a thing for fram locks.

Be aware that if you order a Ti version it will probably be some time before you get one, there are only about 50-100 pieces being made a month and a ton of people are on pre-order. The G-10 version is very nice. My suggestion is to pick up a G-10 version, and then a Ti version a little later. One Military is never enough.

Personally, I think one's first Military should be a G10 model. That is the epitome of what the Military is and always has been and is indeed the persona of the Spyderco Military. The Ti should be the second stage in Military ownership for various reasons.

There is really not much to improve over a good old fashion Military in S30V with the black, orange or digi-camo G10 scales, short of multiple clip configurations. Every other iteration is a luxury, albeit a luxury that I want and will have but I'd start with the standard issue.

The only thing I can think of not to like about a Military is no tip up carry. Once I get my Ti RIL Military, it will immediately be drilled and tapped for tip-up carry.

This is one case where getting BOTH is a more difficult option with the price tags, but considering the Military g10 can be had for around $130 shipped I'd go with that first. The ti versions I've seen sold go for just over $200. I definitely want both and I am on the list but not guaranteed for the M4 G10/Ti combo millie. X]

Tough call.

The G10 is more functional, but the Titanium is well, breathtakingly awesome.

I'd wait it out/ try to handle both in person. If your in the bay area, there's a superb knife shop on Telegraph Avenue, across the street from Genova's sandwhiches. They have ton's of Spyderco's, including several versions of the Military.

Keep in mind, there's rumor of a G10/Titanium millie with M4 steel, so that might give you everything you want.

I think the Ti takes the Military to an entirely new level. I love the way it feels, lock-up is solid and there's a feeling of solidness now that's unmatched by the G-10.
The lock is even fitted and the tang fits right in with Ti over the top, I've never seen this before in any frame-lock. It's my favorite Military by far now.

Personally I don't think there's much point in getting a knife like the Military if you are afraid to use it. Particularly since this is your first Military I say get the G10.

Wow! Really? I used to hang out in that area often (GF used to live there), that shop must be new. I need to check that place out the next time I go to Genova's

As for the OP, I agree with Reeek and started with the original myself. I wanted to experience the original Military, so that I can better appreciate the variants/evolved models later.

I have several G10s and a Ti. I would recommend the G10. Its lighter, and to me its just the "real deal". I'm not even sure I like the Ti, and have considered selling it. Nothing wrong with it. I'm just used to the G10. The Ti really adds nothing functionally (that I can discern), its probably more slippy, and its definitely heavier. JMO.

Do you mind elaborating Jill? I'm not following you about the ti on top of the tang and it being the only one you have seen like it. Thanks!

You can see it's notched and the lock fits over the top of the tang making it even more secure, over thick frame-locks with just the lock face against the tang. I like it a lot, very nice touch.

Hmmm...now that's an interesting detail that I have never seen before.

Back to the OP, if you wish to experience the 'true' Military experience, you will want to get either a G10 of CF iteration. The Ti version is nice to look at, but I have found Ti handles to be slippery when wet and hell in the cold. Just my opinion.

Thanks for the reply. I had to stare at the picture for a minute but finally see what you are talking about. Do you think it adds strength to the lock? I wonder if Sal will chime in on the motivation behind it?

Yes I think it's bound to add a good bit of strength to the lock. It's quite a bit of metal over the tang.

Mine does that too. Never noticed before Jill pointed it out.

I study things with great care and have an eye for detail.;)
