i just got my first mora , a green swedish army one . i really like how it cuts and feels . 11 bucks seemed to make it even better . id really like to know more about moras and scandi knives from people who use them. ive been looking more into scandi knives and have found that there is not a ugly one yet ! how well do they hold up under hard use ? how does the mora compare ? i think im hooked now .mines stainless and ill probably get a carbon one next.

I think you'll find that there is a huge Mora fan base around here. It's pretty much regarded as the top cheap knife. My wife has been using one, and it doesn't look like it's ever going to fail her. The scandi grind is very keen, and very simple to maintain.

I'd go with that carbon one you're thinking about. I tend to prefer carbon for it's edge.

The next step after you find the one that suits you best is to have Normark make you a sheath, as they all come with crap sheaths.

2nd on ragweed forge and carbon mora, and nromark...A simple stropping on some leather will get your mora shaving sharp....

Here is something I have found on most of my Moras. They are made/ground using a computerized process that can sometimes heat up the edge a little to much.

I normally bring out my waterstones and laying the whole bevel flat on the stone to bring it back a ways. This will bring the edge back into "good steel".

You may not need this, but if you find it dulls rather fast, it will fix the problem.

After that, I convex a secondary edge bevel using a mouse pad and 600-800 grit wet dry sandpaper for my utility Moras. This will increase the strength of your edge tremendously for utility work. If it is to be used for wood carving only, I leave it at 0 degrees with just a micro bevel using a strop, and some green chromium compound.

Congrats on you new Mora. You'll love it.

BTW.... I'm addicted to Moras. :)

I'll second the suggestion to use Ragweed Forge. I suggest you check out the Mora 2000 or the 510. If you like the Swedish Army Knife they stock the 740-MG which is basically the same knife, but with a carbon steel blade.

Haha, I just ordered a 510 and a 740-MG. Now I have to wait for it to clear Canadian customs. It'll be awhile this time of year...

gutsy,
You really shouldn't have bought that Mora. They are a little like crack, very addictive. I went from owning one of them, to now having somewhere around 20. One minute you own a couple of them, the next you are ordering Hultafors knives from Denmark in an effort to cure your addiction. Seriously though, Ragnar is a great guy that provides great knives, fast shipping and great prices.

I like most of the Moras I have tried, with the 2000, 510, 780 and Clipper being my favorites. The only one I really disliked was the 440 since the double guard made it uncomfortable to hold. The good news is that I gave the knife to my mom and she uses it quite a bit and really enjoys it.

If you are going to do kitchen work, I find the 2000, Clipper and 510 to be the best since they have very little guard on them and that makes slicing easier.

I also like the carbon blades a little better because to me at least, they seem to take a better edge. That is not to say the stainless knives don't get extremely sharp, they do, but the carbon ones are just my personal favorite. (Why did they not make the 2000 with a carbon blade? If they did, that would be the perfect knife.)

thanks guys , yeah im addicted now . already started to look at some puukos and am curious as to how the much larger scandi knives perform . so far they look to pretty to even use .next paycheck im gettin a carbon mora for sure and ive already took a diamond to the edge after close inspection and it just cuts and cuts , pretty good for stainless id say. to all , thanks so much for the info.

i need to buy some more trauma plates for work , damn . the brusleto troll is really appealing . maybe if i tell everyone that asks "what do you want for christmas ?""just get me one of those cheap mora knives in certain steel and color". i dunno but its worth a shot seeing as how they re not very expensive.

congrats on getting the mora, it'll make a fine knife to work with :)

You need to visit Ragnars finnish knife catalog.

we dont want to break the mans bank now do we :D
