I am interested in buying my first neck knife. I'm not familiar with them or what is desirable or expected out of them. This will also me my first fixed blade actually.

I would assume the carry comfort such as lanyard/strap style, sheath and handle profile, weight, length, etc.

What do you all suggest?

Thanks

on what do you plan to use it ?
for sd...the best imo would be the discontinued spot, the emerson la griffe, or the hak
for actual use, the above are not bad, but there are still many better options, it depends...

Is it fair to say multi-use? EDC for SD and perhaps when outdoors for general use . . .

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Any love for the BM Snody Activator G10?

Mmmm.... I prefer them on the smaller side. Primarily for SD since my folder is always available for the hard work.
Small: Perrin LaGriffe (customs are awesome and come in Bowie, clip point and other practical shapes) the standard for SD neckers, the new standard ones have crinkle coat, I got a used custom clip point and its the Cats Meow. The new one with crinkle coat just sits in the box. Haks or hideaway knives are nice(Straights offer most utility). Just got a ghostmaker ace in a hole.. sweet D2, light and fast.
These two last words sum up my feeling for neck knives. Light and fast. The only larger blade I would consider and have for neck carry is a Strider SLCC (Slim line, concealed carry). This blade is sturdy and capable of full size work but really slim and easy to carry.. not too heavy, but its S30V not titanium.

In regards to the Snody, looks a little bulky to me. But it could be my perception. I havent handled one. I like my neck knives streamlined. I do like its looks though...

I think the key to neck knives is comfort. Finding your comfort zone. Some guys could carry 10 pound bricks and not be bothered at all, while others want the lightest medium available like titanium.

Good luck in finding your comfort zone.

After looking at some pics, the snody is not too bulky on second thought... but at 6 and a half inches long..... did i mention I like them small ;-)

Good luck with your search Reek

Nobody suggesting the Cuda Arclite?

The BM catalog lists the 210/211 Activators as 5.5 inches OAL. Under 6 inches is my preference for a neck knife. The 210 TK is on my list.

A previous poster mentioned my 3 favorite neck knives (Emerson La Griffe, HAK, & Spyderco SPOT). The SPOTs are discontinued & while I've had an HAK, I'm not sure if they've worked through their problems (Someone else will have to give their opinion on that as I got mine when there weren't issues...yet).

I tend to like my neck knives with finger holes because it's easier to access (This is just for me). Neck knives tend to dangle & move around, so I've found that finger holes just make it easier to draw for me.

I also agree that lightweight & slimness is ideal as it makes it more comfortable to carry, especially after a long, hot day. If you don't mind a more traditional like grasp of the knife, that opens your options up quite a bit. The Hellion Nemesis comes to mind (Although I use that for my keychain knife) & Buck/Hartsook are the 1st 2 that come to mind, although there're definitely lots more.

If you're willing to carry a heavier knife, then the B/M's not bad (I've had one of those). I also like Newt Livesay's knives & if you don't mind the bulk, the Becker BK11 (Becker/Necker) has a great blade.

Hope that helps, although I'm sure others will come up with better choices.

Good luck.

Check out some of the Blind Horse Knives. The small tiger knapp may be a good one to try to see if you like neck knives since it is fairly cheap. I have them and like them.

Also check out Tops knives. They have some cool neck knives.

Good luck,
Rob

Looks like knifeworks has the new Kabar Becker Necker in stock...unless this is a pre-order only. Also seems a little pricey with the carbon san mai.

If you're going to seriously entertain the idea of a "necker", you need to check out the Mercharness carry system. http://www.mercop.com/docs/shop_mercharness.htm
Hands-down superior to standard "neck" carry.
Also works for small pistols (check out the handsome hand on the lucky devil w/ the Kel Tec P3AT)

I wouldn't choose a carbon steel knife as a necker, unless you intend to always wear it away from your skin. Otherwise it will rust.

Titanium or Stellite 6K would be more suitable for sweaty carry, IMO. I used to EDC a Larry Ramey Ti necker. So light I could barely tell it was on me.

The Livesay, SPOT, and Arclite knives are great for neck carry, but availability is somewhat problematic. There are are a number of good neckers out there though.Benchmade makes a knife called the Tether knife that would be an excellent necker.
