First Negative Sheeple Reaction

I work in a nearly all male office environment.
I'm also kinda high up on the totem pole... director level in IT.
So, this situation was kinda odd for me.

I'm talking to a one of my people, just about all sorts of stuff.
I showed him my Leek just because I got it new and
was still excited about it.

I handed it to him.. he looked at it, opened it, closed it and gave it back.
Then he said "You must live in a bad neighborhood."
(it's a leek!.... small in my opinion).

I just laughed and said 'not really' and said I used it for mail,
packages, food prep., etc.

This was really my first negative knife comment in a long time. The last place I worked there was an ex-airborne guy who carried multiple knives on him and no one really cared.

Is a 3" bladed knife too big for the office?!

Hey Guys..

Must have been one of them Dar Metrosexual males..

Some people suffer from a general fearosis of living. The Leek is an elegant little knife, exactly what should not set anyone off. But ya never know.

It's the spring assist that gets most people. I have one, and stopped carrying it because of the looks I would get when I would flick it open for the most mundane tasks. "Is that a switchblade?" was all I would hear. It doesn't matter if it's elegant-looking or not, most people are scared of the action. Even my wife, who is former DOC in AZ, said she is afraid of it because it has such a brisk mechanism. I love it, but it has become too much of a PITA to EDC. Now I carry Spydercos, CRKT's, things that don't alarm the sheeple. I keep my real fun toys out of sight. Although the cyclone has been calling to me lately...

I guess any sudden movements frighten them.

Try a fixed blade if you want to see funny reactions ( what ? a knife that doesn't fold   ).

.......and why a negative reaction from a Leek? The leek is one of the friendliest looking designs I've seen. Reminds me of another sheeple reaction story in which a Boker Subcom was called a "deadly Weapon"

I'm most surprised because the guy wasn't the type
I'd condider to be a sheeple. Or else I wouldn't of showed him.
Also, it's Ohio where concealed carry is legal. So, you
see people walking around armed with a handgun... but a leek would
worry you? I'm hoping he is of the minority.

Funny how differently people can view things. I guess WE are all pretty weird. I don't mind, though. I'd rather be this way, and I'm glad you all are too. :)

I have got to know all the "gun & knife " people where I work.
I have taken to using my Strider PT around the office as the AR tended to "spook" people. My Case/Bose also doesn't draw any second looks , the BM210 or Rinaldi Matrix doesnt seem to draw any strange looks either.

Alot of co-workers always ask to see the latest fixed blade I have made , most are more amazed at what a nice knife costs than actually being afraid of them.

They all know where to come when they need something opened though , dont they ? :)

...most are more amazed at what a nice knife costs...

Ain't that the truth! There are times I've told people my Chris Reeve Mountaineer I was "about $50" because they would never understand (only certain types of people), and I still get a weird look like "you spent $50 for a knife?" Haha. I wonder what would happen if I told the truth! Does anybody else sometimes downplay the cost of a good knife to avoid having to explain why they can be expensive sometimes?

Bah... down here, a Rescom is considered a deadly weapon if you don't have good reason for carrying it.

i like to quip that 'it wasn't a problem when i was in the cub scouts'. a lot of people i have shown my kershaw AOs to are hesitant about believing assisted opening knives are legal, because to them it's a switchblade which implies that it's meant for ambushing people. i had a particularly ironic encounter with my "Republican" uncle when i had to insist that it was OK to carry a knife as "This is still the United States of America!"

yeah I had a coworker try to bag on me for what I spend on knives... till I pointed out his $1500 watch , Blackberry , iPod Video , PDA , bluetooth headset that he had on his person.....

though I did promise to cut him free , when all those electronic gizmos short cicuit ;)

When he asked me to open a box I said " What ? That $600 PDA didnt come with a knife ? " hehe.....

Only an assassin would need a switchblade. Like those Silencer people. Who needs one of those?:D

My wife gets the stare in her office building from her 2" Spyderco.

Seriously!

A few years ago, I started supplying my brother-in-law with a few really decent knives. Big, razor sharp, maybe a bit "out there" for style, a couple of autos. He would bring them in to work to show around and everybody else wanted one. LEOs. :D

Believe it or not, New Jersey is not the worst state for knife carry. Standard rules apply: don't wave a blade in someone's face while you're arguing with him

Just goes to show you that it isn't possible to type people, at least not in my experience. My boss sweats at the sight of my Spyderco Delica, here is a guy who carries a small Swiss Army knife and is a rabid tool guy, yet the Delica with serrated edge looks too intimidating to him.

I don't downplay the cost of a knife to most people because of the sheeple across Australia noone sees them.

I take great pleasure in telling my mother in law that it "only cost 300"
;)
