First Opinel

I like to do a little 'Easy Opener' mod on my Opinels. I also run a little olive oil around the pivot area, enough to let it soak into the wood a bit, that sorts out any swelling problems.

man, opinels are great knives. i have a carbon steel #7 that i couldnt stop carrying for months and months.

as far as oiling the pivot; just carry the knife. if it needs greasing then it will become evident. inertia is your friend!

Lovely knives, great value for money too :)

I've had a #7 for a few years and it's stood up to my ham fisted abuse quite well! it makes for a very tidy little whittler!

I got a #9 the other week and started modding yesterday, I went for the woodsman look and it should be finished soon (once I fix my friggin dremel!).

After chopping up an orange and then rinsing under the tap my #9 got stiff but the tap does work well to counter this issue.

I have a #6 and a #8, great knives especially for how little they cost. I confess my favorite for pocket carry is the #6, the #8 lives in my Scout pack and has been on a lot of adventures.

For our annual Christmas grab bag I bought a #6, wrapped it up and put it into the pile. One of my Scouts knew ahead of time as he heard me talking about them. When it was his turn, he snapped it up and opened it off to the side so the other guys didn't see (and didn't do a 'steal'). Now he carries it to all our meetings and events. I told him he needs to show it off so the other guys want one and get rid of their crappy gas station folders!

Enjoy your new knife!
Cheers,
Griff

I've only got one left these days, a No. 10. It's my favorite size, and after I re-shaped the handle a little, it's one of my favorites to carry & use.
Congrats on your first... I predict it won't be your last! ;)

finished my #9 earlier :)

well, I had other plans too but I couldn't be bothered to fix the dremel and sort some other bits..

I don't wanna hi-jack this thread, but I have an Opinel 6 that I got not too long ago, and I havent used it a whole lot yet...
How strong are these guys with such a thin blade?

don't pry with it and you'll be fine. I've seen one guy baton with a #10 and it didn't break and I've only ever bent the tip on one (my #7), which I then filed down to what it looks like now!

There's a guy on youtube that does a torture test with an Opinel number 10 or something big, and he uses it as a machete, ax, brush tool, and wood splitter. He hammers it through boards. Never broke. Opinels are way more rugged than you would think from the light weight of them. I've used them as beater knives, and never had one break.

Here's my modified #8, a wonderful knife, scary sharp. Congrats on your first Opie.

Best regards

I need to try that! I have a few little deer tines, and one massive 1/2 rocky mountain elk shed that I have.

Hi there BF
One tip I can give you is try to match the size of the head on the pivot pin. The locking ring rotates on the peened head. Mine is a little smaller so when the open lock is engaged the locking ring rides up towards the blade leaving a bit of a gap between the ring and the antler handle.:o Quite annoying:D

Best regards

Robin

Here's my modified #8 by Laurent Gaillard, a French knivemaker, a wonderful knife, scary sharp. Congrats on your first Opie.
