Yesterday I received my first Opinel (no. 8) and was really pleased with the simple design and graceful looks. What a great little knife for $10. Of course it needed sharpening which was very easy and I applied some mineral oil to protect the blade and handle. I'll designate this knife a "food knife" and keep it with the camp stuff.

Really neat. I´m also considering buying one of those (preferably #8). How does it appear so far?? Blade play, finish and so on. I know, for that kind of price, I can´t ask for miracles. However, I´d still wish to know ...

dePaul,

No play now. But this knife won't be seeing much load either. The wood handle is milled to hold the blade (i.e. steel bearing on soft wood). I'm sure the wood will soften and wear so that the blade will eventually "play". But, for a small, light knife, it's great. As I wrote, this one'll be dedicated to working with food. The other knives cut anything from motor oil bottles to cardboard.

Dn't be afraid to use your Opinel for heavyier tasks. They are one of the toughest knives out there. The #8 is a great outdoors/ camping knife. Plus it has about the most secure lock you'll find.

Another vote for the Opinel for many tasks. Thin carbon steel sharpens in seconds with any stone (think mini Gatco), slices thru food as well as the Spyderco Calypso Jr. at 1/4 the price. Solid lockup. One of my Opinel folders got left in water for 2 days (I was out of town and my wife left it in the sink!).

The wood was swollen tight and the blade was completely laden with rust. I thought it was time for the trash can. But I rubbed off the rust with Scotchbrite, applied mineral oil and let the wood dry naturally.

Wood returned to orignal size. Blade has some black on it, but is a great cutter and lock works perfectly.

You might also look into the Cold Steel Twistmaster for the more high-tech version of this concept.

Smoky MOuntain has sold out of the large drop point Twistmaster, but still had the large clip point last nite, for $12. It is about twice as big as the Opinel #8. It is huge! Great food knife, tho I'm glad I got a couple of the drop points.

Also, Opinel does make a model #84, which has SS.

Opinels are great little knives, and at a great price. I gave a #9 away here on the forums about 3 months ago.

I own a number 7 and 12. For the money they are the best knives made! 1075 steel and a good lock. I advise many to carry a n7 in the UK as most officers are too thick to realise its a twistlock and its a 3" blade.

I have a #8 and it is a great knife. I drilled the handle for a lanyard. It takes an amazing edge. (it doesnt hold it very long, but that may be because I am using too small an angle... the 15 degree setting on the sharpmaker(the back bevel setting) )

This is a GREAT knife for $10. Go buy one. Heck, buy two or three. I am thinking of getting a smaller one also. I've never had a stainless steel bladed one, but I've heard the steel isnt too great...
