Hi All,
I returned from Mississippi yesterday having felt the residual of Gustov and suffered a great deal of rain there. Made work that much easier to do. Anyhow, I arrived to find a couple of new knives waiting for me from Bryan Breeden. I haven't had the time to put these through their paces yet but I have fondled them enough to know what I like about them.
The first is a modified Kat Knife with a PSK handle. The handle is 4" long and 1/4" thick osage slabs. Blade is 3.5" long and 3/32" thick. This little blade actually feels pretty stiff and is a perfect size for slicing and general cutting. I did spend a bit of time thinning this one down on the grind stone and it is nicely shaving sharp now.
I will probably sand down the front edges of the slabs a bit this weekend. The handle feels perfect in my hand. It is long enough to fit my hand without any excess handle length keeping it nice and compact. The wood is warm to the touch. Perhaps not the grippiest, but the dip in the front edge acts as a sufficient guard.
Bryan really out-did himself on the sheathes of these two. The leather is soft to the touch, has great colour and excellent blade retention. As much as I love Kydex, I just might stick with the leather pants on these guys. That brown leather and osage handle seem very balanced together.
The second is Bryan's Peacemaker Model. This one is a 6" blade with 4.5" handle. Blade thickness is 1/8" and blade width is 1.5". It is basically the same knife that JeffH reviewed last week. The peacemaker arrived very sharp, easily shaving hair. I didn't bother touching up this one.
Again, the handle feels really good in the hand. Lots of room, but not too long.
The Peacemaker is definately more meaty in girth and weight than its 5" pathfinder brother. As discussed in JeffH's review, it has a sort of classic, simple look to it. I really love the 1/8" blade thickness and even though it is longer in length, it has a bit more stiffness than the pathfinder due to the greater blade width.
So far, I'm very pleased with the feel and appearance of these knives. I'm going to make sure I get out in the bush on Sunday to test them out. I'll re-post here once I get some of that testing completed.
Hope you enjoyed the picks.
