First PM2. Question on blade drop

Ok, first post and first PM2. Right out of the box the blade doesn’t swing freely. I have worked it back and forth and it improved slightly. It still won’t close on it’s own when I press the compression lock. So 2 questions...do I need to loosen the pivot screw slightly or will it drop freely with just more use?

Also right before the blade locks open, there is a click right before the lock engages, is that normal? I have a second PM2 hopefully arriving tomorrow in the mail that I can compare it to, but that blade will have a DLC blade.

Thanks for the help!

I've had to loosen all my pivots and add a little oil and then good to go. Its a t10 torx you might have to apply a good amount of force on at least one of the screws. I'd back them out evenly.

No need to tweak the knife. It will break in.

Yes - the click is normal - it is the compression lock is engaging with the blade tang.

Thank you! I was spoiled with the Benchmade 940 out of the box. I was hoping for the same with the PM2. Fingers crossed that tomorrow’s knife is better.

Thanks! I was going to add a picture but it looks like it might need to be hosted somewhere else?

My Maxamet PM 2 doesn’t free fall, but it’s smooth as all get out. No need to do anything to it at this point.

It is pretty stiff but it seems like it is breaking in. My old Spydercos are cheaper ones and they don’t drop at all. I like the free fall for the adult fidget spinner aspect as I suspect most other people do too.

I’ve had a lot of PM2’s and Like four Para3’s. I’ve only had one where I had to tweak the pivot screw to make it drop freely. All the others loosened up over time or came from the factory dropping on their own. I’m sure there are counter examples, but that’s been my experience (anecdotal though it is).

My second PM2 showed up today. It’s nice to be able to compare them together. I had never held a PM2 before receiving my first one yesterday. The action on the one I received today is almost exactly like the first. I will just need to be patient and let them break in. I do want to move both pocket clips but it seems as the T6 bit I have is looser than I would like and I don’t want to chance stripping them. Guess it is time for a more precision one.

Wiha makes a Torxplus set that fits the Spyderco better than the normal Wiha torx set.
When it comes to torx bits, Wiha is the route to go.

It’s sad the I’m finding comfort in some having as bad of a knife addiction as I do. I pace my purchases like a week out lol

Ha, well it is only because I was undecided on the two. I thought I had decided and then decided I needed both :)

The first click before the lock clicking into place is the detent ball passing the blade tang. It is normal.

Both my Pm2s free drop, my first was almost there when I got it (unused on ebay). The 2nd (my bento box pm2) was too tight. Just a slight turn of the pivot made it a free dropper. Still have never opened it up to clean, but I rotate between a lot of knives lol

PM2s don’t drop freely until a few days of breaking in has been my experience. It’ll be a little adjusting of the pivot periodically over the next few days, and fidgeting with it throughout the day with opening/closing will loosen things up.
