Greetings,
It happened innocently enough. I was in my local Hardware store to pick up light bulbs and a new multi-purpose screwdriver when out of the corner of my eye I noticed a display case filled with knives. Curiosity beckoned and before long I was asking to try out some of the knives. Outside of being a Boy Scout several decades prior I had not held a knife in my hand - other than flatware and kitchen knives. There was a special "something" that awakened inside me and I grew more excited with each new knife handed to me for inspection. Was it the feeling of the handle? Was it the audible "snap" when the knife locked open? Whatever "it" was - I was hooked and made my first purchase: a Kershaw RANDOM LEEK Tanto Serrated 1660T GRYST with Speed-Safe technology.
I am a 48 year old Minister of Music of an Assembly of God Church and this was an unusual purchase as far as my wife was concerned. "Why can't you just use scissors?" was my wife's reply when I showed her my first purchase. I laughed because I knew that deep down she would never understand the connection that was forged that afternoon in the Hardware Store.
Currently I own:
Kershaw RANDOM LEEK Tanto Serrated 1660T GRYST
Kershaw SCALLION 1620ST
Kershaw OFFSET G10 1597G10
Kershaw TYRADE 1850
CRKT Crawford Triumph 1030K
Buck Sirus 0297G2S CAT. 5943
Buck Transport B756-PE-0 CAT. 5978
Smith and Wesson SWSORTB
Benchmade 9500SBK Mini Stryker Auto
Benchmade 2550SBK Mini Reflex Auto
Leatherman Charge TTi Titanium 830683
I just placed an order for 4 Lone Wolf Knives and an additional CRKT Triumph in a different configuration than my original purchase.
I use Compressed Air to blow out any pocket fuzz that accumulates inside of each knife that I use as an EDC and also rely on BREAK FREE CLP Cleaner/Lubricant/Preservative to oil the joints of each knife so they open true.
I have a multitude of questions about this great hobby of Knife Collecting, sharpening, maintenance and care. They will be asked in due time. For now I just wanted to introduce myself to the community.
Since my hobby began about a year ago I have given out many Kershaw SCALLIONS as gifts to male family members, men in my church, and people that I have interacted with on various projects. I always receive a "Thank You" note and they usually state that life is so much easier having a pocket knife for little tasks that would have sent them looking for scissors or kitchen knives.
I am passionate about this new hobby of mine and hope to attend a Knife Show sometime this year so I can see the work of Custom Knifemakers.
One problem I have encountered is that people view men who carry knives through a negative lens and make erroneous judgment calls as to the integrity and moral character of that individual. I was called before the Church Council for giving the SCALLIONS as gifts to the men in our church. Knowing this was going to happen I presented each Council member with a Kershaw SCALLION as a gift and gave them each a ripe huge Orange fruit. I pointed out how the Kershaw was perfect for peeling an Orange. My little demonstration and gift-giving saved me from a Formal Reprimand that day.
I am careful not to be "flashy" with my EDC. The public has a very negative perception of folding knives. When I am asked if I have a knife to cut twine or some other use - people are amazed that a Pastor would carry a knife. It helps in changing their mindset when I explain all the different ways in which I use my knife as a valuable tool. It is wonderful to see their facial expressions change when they realize that not all knives are weapons and not all men who carry them are "bad."
Anyway, I just wanted to say hello to everyone and am grateful that a community like this exists. My favorite magazines are now BLADE, TACTICAL KNIVES, and KNIVES ILLUSTRATED. I still make all my purchases through the local Hardware Store - although he does not carry a great many knives that I need to find another source of purchasing from.
