Greetings,

It happened innocently enough. I was in my local Hardware store to pick up light bulbs and a new multi-purpose screwdriver when out of the corner of my eye I noticed a display case filled with knives. Curiosity beckoned and before long I was asking to try out some of the knives. Outside of being a Boy Scout several decades prior I had not held a knife in my hand - other than flatware and kitchen knives. There was a special "something" that awakened inside me and I grew more excited with each new knife handed to me for inspection. Was it the feeling of the handle? Was it the audible "snap" when the knife locked open? Whatever "it" was - I was hooked and made my first purchase: a Kershaw RANDOM LEEK Tanto Serrated 1660T GRYST with Speed-Safe technology.

I am a 48 year old Minister of Music of an Assembly of God Church and this was an unusual purchase as far as my wife was concerned. "Why can't you just use scissors?" was my wife's reply when I showed her my first purchase. I laughed because I knew that deep down she would never understand the connection that was forged that afternoon in the Hardware Store.

Currently I own:
Kershaw RANDOM LEEK Tanto Serrated 1660T GRYST
Kershaw SCALLION 1620ST
Kershaw OFFSET G10 1597G10
Kershaw TYRADE 1850
CRKT Crawford Triumph 1030K
Buck Sirus 0297G2S CAT. 5943
Buck Transport B756-PE-0 CAT. 5978
Smith and Wesson SWSORTB
Benchmade 9500SBK Mini Stryker Auto
Benchmade 2550SBK Mini Reflex Auto
Leatherman Charge TTi Titanium 830683

I just placed an order for 4 Lone Wolf Knives and an additional CRKT Triumph in a different configuration than my original purchase.

I use Compressed Air to blow out any pocket fuzz that accumulates inside of each knife that I use as an EDC and also rely on BREAK FREE CLP Cleaner/Lubricant/Preservative to oil the joints of each knife so they open true.

I have a multitude of questions about this great hobby of Knife Collecting, sharpening, maintenance and care. They will be asked in due time. For now I just wanted to introduce myself to the community.

Since my hobby began about a year ago I have given out many Kershaw SCALLIONS as gifts to male family members, men in my church, and people that I have interacted with on various projects. I always receive a "Thank You" note and they usually state that life is so much easier having a pocket knife for little tasks that would have sent them looking for scissors or kitchen knives.

I am passionate about this new hobby of mine and hope to attend a Knife Show sometime this year so I can see the work of Custom Knifemakers.

One problem I have encountered is that people view men who carry knives through a negative lens and make erroneous judgment calls as to the integrity and moral character of that individual. I was called before the Church Council for giving the SCALLIONS as gifts to the men in our church. Knowing this was going to happen I presented each Council member with a Kershaw SCALLION as a gift and gave them each a ripe huge Orange fruit. I pointed out how the Kershaw was perfect for peeling an Orange. My little demonstration and gift-giving saved me from a Formal Reprimand that day.

I am careful not to be "flashy" with my EDC. The public has a very negative perception of folding knives. When I am asked if I have a knife to cut twine or some other use - people are amazed that a Pastor would carry a knife. It helps in changing their mindset when I explain all the different ways in which I use my knife as a valuable tool. It is wonderful to see their facial expressions change when they realize that not all knives are weapons and not all men who carry them are "bad."

Anyway, I just wanted to say hello to everyone and am grateful that a community like this exists. My favorite magazines are now BLADE, TACTICAL KNIVES, and KNIVES ILLUSTRATED. I still make all my purchases through the local Hardware Store - although he does not carry a great many knives that I need to find another source of purchasing from.

All My Best,

Welcome to the Forums, Thinline! Sounds like you've got a pretty good start on decent knife collection there.

Nice collection you've got going so far...

I hate how people judge you as well when you have a knife on you. Anyway, welcome.

Welcome aboard! That's an impressive list of knives you have there .

Thank You pdkmslf, swimmerdude1127, and XD45. I will always remember you gentlemen for being the first to welcome me here to the community. I think the little blurbs that are posted below your replies to my thread are excellent. The quotations? like " Why do I carry.......For Lions, Tigers and you get the idea. Very imaginative! How do I do that?

What are some of the better online stores or purveyors to purchase folders from? Is there any one establishment that discounts more than the rest?

I'd like to purchase some ZT knives. However, my friend at the Hardware Store can only get Kershaw Knives - even though they are under the same corporate umbrella? I also would like a William Henry knife for my 50th Birthday. Does anyone know of a dealer that discounts them or are they so high-end that there are no discounts because of the degree of quality craftsmanship?

Thanks for the warm welcome!!!

New Graham has always been good to me and I wholly endorse them- they are a well respected company on this forum.

Welcome to the addiction!! More expensive than crack but it lasts longer.

Dear CUTS LIKE A KRIS:

Thank you for recommending New Graham. I really need to branch out and add different makers to my collection. I don't drink, smoke, do drugs, womanize or gamble. Thankfully, that has allowed me to save money for the more important things in life like - KNIFE COLLECTING!!! My wife allows me to purchase 2 or 3 knives a month. All in all I have given away about 35 Kershaw SCALLIONS to men that I felt would appreciate owning a quality knife. Thanks for the "addictive" welcome and I know it is true because I eagerly await my magazines to arrive and call the Hardware Store weekly to see if he got anything new in that might interest me. I'm hooked for life.

Welcome ThinLine thats a great story. Most of us look at a knife as a tool. I'd rather run than get in a knife fight. No one wins one of those, unless they are a pro. I'm not.
I alwaws carried a cheap knife of some kind untill one day someone showed me a Kershaw leek with speedsafe and that was it for me now I have half a dozen GOOD knives, mostly Kershaw and plans for more .
You can do a goolge search for "pocket knives" or use a brand name like "Kershaw knives" there many on line sites out there that are good.
Also Wal Mart has a good but limited selection.
I've only purchased from one on line store but I'm sure someone will be along that can recomend a few good ones.
If you really like Kershaw try the Kershaw sub forum, It's a good resource with good people, a little crazy but a lot of fun.

Thanks dmonay. I'm not into it for the tactical advantage knife fight mentality either. There is just something so cool about collecting knives. I only carry two of my knives - the rest are kept in their original boxes with all the paperwork that came with them.

My EDC knives are the Kershaw SCALLION for peeling fruit and opening mail. The other EDC is the CRKT Triumph with OUTBURST assisted opening technology. That knife I use for bigger chores like cutting up boxes, cutting through plastic to open toys for my kids, etc.

Never thought to try Walmart. Thanks for the heads up on the sub-forums.

Nice post, TL. My advice is, don't make the same mistake I did--don't buy too many knives early in your 'knife career.' It is better to read here and other knife forums, along with Blade and other magazines, and have the patience to figure out what you really want.

Dittos to the above--welcome. (I haven't been posting here for more than a couple months myself).

Rich357:

How sweet is the Boker with the Damascus Blade? That is indeed a quality knife!

I like the Chris Reeve link too. I remember the Pacifica fixed blade won an award.

For some reason - I love tactical folders more than any other style. Although if I had the go ahead from my wife I would custom order the Marauder by Pat & Wes Crawford. It is a tactical folder that is also an art knife - to me anyway.

Interesting. I also tend to lean toward the tactical folders. I prefer frame locks and the AXIS lock.

Good luck with your knife hunting!

welcome to the forums. like james said, its a good place to hang out. there is a lot of good information here and a lot of good people.

wutitis: Thanks for the compliment. I know what I like - tactical folders. I know what I want for investment grade - William Henry. I know that I know next to nothing and am brand new at this obsession. I use BLADE magazine as my reference manual and have been slowly buying most of the 2007 Award Winners within my budget. I gotta tell you - this is a great hobby!

I'm also fortunate to have an understanding supportive wife who is allowing me to spend our money on a hobby she doesn't quite get - yet. I plan on taking her to my first Knife Show so she can see firsthand the knives and knifemakers and maybe get a better grasp on collecting.

I have never asked for anything extravagant in all the years we've been married and I guess she figures it beats wanting to buy classic cars or classic guitars or something else that is far more costlier.

My brothers love that I have given them knives as presents. My younger brother wants to reciprocate and get me a shotgun as that is his hobby.
