First post here - 117 or 120?

I filled up my cart, and kept going back to see if any prices dropped when they did I pounced. All bought from c&c but from a popular sight that sells everything and has prime shipping.

The 117 is a good all around knife. Great for hunting too.
Eat the elephant a bite at a time,,,,,,, you'll get there!

I'm not a collector. I've always thought of Buck knives like Ruger firearms as a good value for the money. I have a few Bucks and some other stuff that I use off and on. This 3 line 120 I bought in 1982 at a gun show for $30. I've never used it, never cut anything with it and never sharpened it but it remains one of my favs.

As stated above starting a collection the 117 will be easier to source thus easier to have a "complete" collection of all variations.

Honestly the 120 is probably more of an "iconic" Buck knife.

Just depends on what direction you want to go. Are you a collector in the sense of "I want one of every fixed blade offered" or are you a "I want an example of every variation of this model that was offered"

The former will be easier and cheaper than the latter

The latter will have more "collector" value

The former could be completed fairly quickly assuming you have the budget

The latter will take years/forever

Now would be a good time to check out C&C's website for that 120.

They are a supporting vendor right?

C&C has some good prices, just got a 117 in 5160 in dymond wood for a good price, I think it is the mnin 119 sheath as opposed to the one made for the 117. Just to ask again, is C&C a forum supporter? If not. Please edit my post.

I ended up getting a 120 when C+C stared the sale just over a week ago. Darn it if I didn't then order a 105 after that... both in Brass/Cocobolo Dymondwood. I'm weak willed, so I'll probably end up with a 117 at some point, but I've well exceeded my limit for before Christmas.

I think mine has the aluminum hardware and mini 119 sheath, the C&C exclusive I believe, so I will see if it holds it securely, have heard that it may be too big of a sheath for the shorter blade. Anyone have the same sheath and what do you think of the 5160 blade? Thanks for any info you can share.

I think 420hc holds an edge longer than 5160.
But that's based on a pair of 112's I have been carrying daily.

It depends on what you want to use it for.

The 105 sheath they used for the 117 is a little bit long but it is not an issue. I think the actual 117 sheath they started to ship is about the same size. Both hold the knife very securely.

I like all my 117s.
They are a good size knife. I wish they made a s30v micarta version.

Question, is the 117 a new pattern? Or an old one just brought back? I am excited about the size, smaller than the 119 and bigger than the 102, the handle is from the 105. Just got one in 5160 in dymondwood from C&C.
