First Post (New Member) Steel quality Civivi?

Welcome to the forums btw. One thing I have learned since becoming a member (8 years next month) is to be stingy about where I buy my knives from online. I avoid ebay and amazon at all costs. I have yet to receive a fake because of this.

I actually just bought my first knife through ebay. However, there is a major asterisk to this. I bought a customized ZT 0470 and I had a long email conversation with the shop owner before purchasing, and it was not just some rando on ebay selling a very popular model. So, YMMV but for very popular models especially, stick with BF authorized retailers like BladeHQ, DLTTrading, USAMadeBlade, etc.

So in essence 440B and 58-60HRC.

No. There are differences. I've linked a graph comparing their compositions. Supposedly, 9Cr18Mov is an improved formula based on 440B. In practice, Civivi gives 9Cr18Mov an exceptional heat treatment. It's a bit like the difference between 420HC and Buck's 420HC with the Bos heat treatment; only from a better starting point. At least for my EDC needs, Civivi's 9Cr18Mov is in the same ballpark as VG-10 and 14C28N.

I stated “in essence”.

I’m also not familiar with Chinese steel, thankfully.

Nothing really changes, D2 would still be the better bet.

I see where the trouble is. You are "thankfully" not familiar with Chinese steel. You say that "nothing really changes". Well, the funniest thing happened. The Chinese actually make a version of D2 now. You must not have realized that you were recommending Chinese D2.

Unfortunately, it's not as highly regarded as the D2 you know. It varies from company to company but Chinese D2 tends to fall short of what you might get from Benchmade or another American company. The gap in edge retention is probably similar to the difference between average 9Cr18Mov and WE's 9Cr18Mov in the Civivi and Sencut knives. Look, if you're only familiar with 440B, you might want to check out a Civivi in 9Cr18Mov. You might be pleasantly surprised. I know I was.

I’m fully aware of Chinese D2. The very first post in this thread indicates that Civivi were willing to provide the OP with a D2 replacement.

Did you actually believe that I thought they were going to provide him with a US made D2 blade instead of a Chinese made D2 blade? Surely you jest.

Sorry to disappoint, but I won’t be purchasing any Chinese knives no matter the steel composition.

Forgive me. I didn't think you were aware of Chinese D2 because you specifically said that you were not familiar with Chinese steel. Surely, you would not be recommending a steel that you've never tried over another steel that you've never tried.

That said, why bother participating in this thread at all? I mean, this is a thread about Chinese steel on a Chinese knife. You said that you are "thankfully" unfamiliar with Chinese steel. You said that you "won't be purchasing any Chinese knives no matter the steel composition". So you have no experience with the knives, materials, or companies in question, nor interest in the same, and you seem happy about that... I guess I'm a little confused. What exactly do you have to offer here?
