Hello. My name is Jack Cooper and I am glad I found this forum. I have made a few knives but nothing I would show anytime soon. Anyway, I was planning on possibly trying to sell a few at an upcoming street festival... hence the question. Do you think it is "necessary or prudent" to have a LLC (limited Liability Corporation) attached to your business since they are knives? Or would you just keep it a hobby? I am worried about the liability. Thank you for your thoughts.

Maybe it is a non issue. I was just thinking if I sold a knife that I had made and it turned out that it was a minor and he lied about his age or something like that. I don't want my hobby to put me in a position that would make me personally liable. Also I know that just an LLC won't give 100% protection. I know there are milions of knives sold but none with my name on it. I use to make jewelry and was concerned that a child could swallow it and the parents could sue and take my savings etc. Maybe I am just paraniod.

I cant see why youd need it. If someone does themself a mischeif with one of your blades how are you at fault? If one of your blades fails and causes an injury then it will be the fault of the user, unless your blades are unsafe but the you will know that and wouldnt sell them.

I wouldnt worry about it. Thier only knives and will only be used as knives. With stuff like swords that wil be used at public demos theres a little risk but again you shouldnt sell or let others use knives your not confidant with. I think it was Bob Engnath who said he had nightmares about a blade in one of his swords lossening in the handle and sailing into a crowd of spectators, your making knives so i wouldnt worry.

Since I do this as a hobby I carry a 1mil. umbrella policy on my home owner insurance.
Costs abbout 150.00 a year and you have some piece of mind.
