hi all, just made an account here, i bought a Byrd 'cara cara', which I know isnt a proper Spyderco knife and is made in china with lower grade materials, but in my opinion it good value (and when a student cheap is good), and it gives me a basic idea on what a more expensive spydie would be like.

I didn't get it long ago (in days), but the blade doesn't glide through news print like it first did. But considering it just new, do I need to put a new edge on it, or can I just 'straighten it out' I have heard that a packers steel will work and even the top of car window, is that BS?

I GENUINELY don't, I'm 100% new to all this. I guess I will get a Sharpmaker or some whetstones if need be.

thanks. bob

PS: sorry about my spelling, and I hope this in the right section.

A "steel" will realigne the edge and get it back to sharp.
if you have wear to the edge you will need to remove material to get it sharp again so using stones or the sharpmaker will help there.

Stroping the blade will also keep it sharp and help polish up the edge for that hair poping edge.

Welcome to the forums by the way :)

instructional DVD, that sounds like something I need.

thanks for the relies and warm welcome

if I realign and strop regularly I will I need to sharpen less regularly

A steel will work, but not for long. Sooner or later you will have to use some whetstones, or a Sharpmaker.
So I would recommend the Sharpmaker, too.
I know it' s quite expensive, but it' s very simple to use, comes with instructional DVD, and will last you a lifetime..IMO worth every penny:thumbup:

Welcome to the forums btw!

651 bobby--

Take it from a seasoned pro--and by seasoned i mean alota time on the stones---get a sharpmaker whatever u do. protect it and you wont regret it. I use mine for sharpening any and everything. USE very light pressure on all the stones--to me if ya press hard it doesnt feel like youre getting anywhere.

on plain edges i use leather gorilla glued to a flat wooden surface one side is prepped w/ either simichrome or maguires all metal polish and on the other is rough side up.

polish AWAY from the edge...hair says bye-bye
